If churches were taxed for all their income and property, they’d crumble overnight of their own obsolescence, and the National Debt would be wiped out as quickly. The productive, the creative, the resourceful should be subsidized. So long as the useless and incompetent are getting paid, they should be heavily taxed.

I definitely think anything religious should be taxed, as well as the definition of religion re-evaluated.
Here in the UK scientology has fought so hard to get itself classed as a religion, but they haven't succeeded (which is a good thing). So many small cults etc get themselves classed as religions in America to gain themselves a tax-free status, in my opinion taxing religion might save a few people in the long run.
If a church is really, really a non-profit organisation, that is a different matter, but otherwise it is a business and taxes apply to all other businesses.

Hmm yes and no.
Churches are non-profit. If you start to tax THEM you open the door to tax OTHER non-profit. I don't agree with these mega churches or missions to the Bahamas. But there are organizations out there, including some churches, that are struggling to pay the bills because they don't have 20 million followers. They don't deserve to be punished because Six Flags of Jesus over here is trying to outdo the church down the street.
edit: No, I know. They find ways around it and yes it's wrong. I'm talking about OTHER churches, not the Mega Churches that seem to have forgotten the MEANING of Christianity. I'm also talking abot OTHER non-profit. And yes churches fall under non-profit, how in some cases I don't know. I'm talking food pantries and homeless shelters.

Agree to a degree. I have no problem with a church building and parsonage being tax exempt. However, the catholic church, has vast property holdings which are tax exempt and have nothing to do with anything religious. Therefore I am heavily in favor of taxing anything pertaining to relgion except for the house of worship itself and the quarters for it's minister.

All income should be taxed, and the income for churches should be no different.
I don't think it would wipe out the national debt overnight, but it would wipe out many vampires under the guise of the church.

Tax ALL religions into oblivion. And demand a pound of flesh from the televangelists.

Matt, when I turn up to church for Xmas or Easter the candles blow out.
Hardly joking. I'm drained to the blood with tax.
Tax the church and they're gone. For good.
And that wood serve them right.

The problem with that statement from my perspective is that our government would simply find new ways to spend new revenue and this country would continue to run up deficits. Here's the basis of how our government works...if it works, tax it. If it still works, regulate it. If it stops working, subsidize it.

Yes, they should be taxed. That is part of separation of church and state. Religion insists in getting into government, then let them pay their taxes like everyone else.

No one, or anything will cause Christ's church to crumble. If anything, the true church will rise to great heights and power, as they turn to God and pray.
I feel terrible for you anton, you think you are wise, but one day you're going to wake up and see how useless and wasted your life has been. Jesus says," Repent and be saved." - Jesus loves you.
