I find that most folks are pleased to be asked to bring a covered dish to a dinner when they are asked to be guest.Even more so for the holidays. It gives them a chance to make an old family favorite or try something new ! And I'm sure that they will offer to help set up the table and with clean up ! Relax and have a wonderful Thanksgiving ! Here is a star and I'm wishing you all the best .

It is generally the hosts responsibility to provide the main dish/es, (ie: the turkey, dressing, potatoes, gravy, rolls, etc.)
* I say rolls because nobody wants cold bread.
It is acceptable for the guests to bring side dishes and/or desserts, if they choose to. You need to prearrange these ideas though. If something should happen and one or more of your guests are unable to arrive for whatever reason. Your other guests should not be "out of luck" because you didn't feel like cooking. In other words, don't make your guests responsible for some part of the meal you can't do without.
There are also many sides that can be prepared one or two days in advance. Such as desserts, deviled eggs, etc.
It sounds like though, if it is just close family and it is informal you probably don't have anything to worry about. Just play it by ear and go with the flow. They'll still love you, even if you do burn the bird. ;-)
It's about being together, right?

If you have never cooked it before, it is a huge undertaking. Asking folks to bring a dish is fine. You should cook the turkey and stuffing, the rolls, and the mashed potatoes (rolls and mashed potatoes are hard to bring to the dinner and keep warm till dinner.) Others can bring corn, sweet potatoes, any pre-dinner snacks (deviled eggs, relish tray), creamed pearl onions, cranberries, or whatever you like for them to bring. If you continue to do it, you may want to take on more dishes or the whole meal in future years. It is not that hard once you have some experience under your belt.

This is very good idea ask each family bring there own dish, if you have more than 5 families, you can make the families contest, see who is the number 1 cook. But you should cook the important dish. (Turkey)

No, basically you should do the main turkey and dressing and maybe mashed potatoes, but you should definitely ask your family to each bring dishes like sides and dessert. If one person makes something you really like, ask them for that dish, but don't just say, "Bring whatever you want," because you'll end up with 5 greenbean casseroles.

In my family we eat at Grandma's she makes the Turkey and stuffing and we each bring a dish - decide before hand who is making what potatoes, yams, cornbread, rolls, cranberry sauce etc. In my family we each also bring a desert too! Most families I know do it this way and it is perfectly acceptable. After all that is what the holiday is about, sharing in your bounty - like the first Thanksgiving :)

yeah definitely ask them!! You just be sure to provide at least 3 dishes yourself INCLUDING THE TURKEY so no one thinks you are pawning it off on everyone else. I am sure they would be delighted to bring a dish too..I know I LOVE helping out bc we always go to our families and we always bring a dish!
I get so excited this time of year!

you definitely should ask each members of your family to bring each a plate such as a side dish, salad, dessert, and maybe if they want to, they can also bring some kind of beverages to drink. all you need to provide is turkey and stuffing's in Addition to dressings. that way see you will not have to do all the work.

I always do the turkey and dressing, and everyone else brings what they like best. It works out very well, and if someone doesn't bring what I think we should have, I always make sure I have all the fixings. It is good to know who is bringing what so you don't have to much of one thing.

For a 10 year old the hand turkey could be a sprint boring. although, I nevertheless think of it particularly is a brilliant undertaking. Your cousin could make a Thanksgiving topiary or tree of thank you. right this is what you will choose: >a small backyard plant pot (or a can it particularly is roofed in incredibly shape paper on the exterior). >2 products of froth, one around one and one that could be around or any shape >cranberries, cloves, or different organic products, this might additionally be finished with fake flora >sticks, twigs >some dry moss, rafia, or cranberries (uncooked) >non-compulsory, a sprint ribbon to verify, toothpicks (if utilising cranberries), and spray glitter a million. place the froth that may not around interior the backside of the container 2. locate a brilliant at as quickly as stick and push it in to the froth, make confident it particularly is at as quickly as up. do no longer push it each and every of how by using so it touches the pot or can on the backside. 3. Stick the around foam on the suited of the stick. lower back, do no longer push it each and every of how by using. 4. Then push your flora, cloves, or cranberries into the around foam. For the cranberries, you will first might desire to adhere them with a toothpick and then stick it in to the froth. 5. keep sticking issues in till your foam is carefully lined. The smaller your merchandise, the longer it extremely is going to take. 6. Then, conceal the backside foam with moss or greater cranberries (merely pile them on till the froth is roofed, no toothpicks mandatory) 7. ultimately, tie a ribbon around the "trunk" of your topiary To make an excellent greater convenient version, quite of utilising a strainght stick, use one that has greater than a number of little branches coming off of it so curiously like a sprint tree. Stick it into the froth interior the container. you will no longer want a seconf piece of froth. Then, utilising constuction paper, decrease out little leaves in even though Thanksgiving colorations you want. Punch a hollow in a single end of the "leaf" and use ribbon, yarn, or string to grasp the leaves from the tree. on the leaves, previous to time, ask human beings to write down what they're grateful for, or interview them and write it for them. it particularly is a incredibly ornament. conceal the backside up a similar way you lined the topiaries.
