With the nights beginning to get shorter our thoughts inevitably turn towards Christmas.

What are your thoughts ?

Why is it the people who say "that they love you more than anyone on the earth" the ones that hurt you the most. They kick you when you are down and turn around say what you want to here to keep you around. Why is it the closer you are the more they hurt you?

Here on Earth, punishment serves three basic purposes: rehabilitation (to convince criminals never to commit crimes again), deterrent (to scare other people away from misbehavior), or retribution (to pay society back for the harm caused). But what is the purpose of God torturing people in Hell?

It can't be for rehabilitation -- Hell is supposed to be eternal; so even if you eventually learn your lesson, you're still stuck there forever.

It can't be deterrent -- there's no credible evidence to suggest hell is a real place (according to surveys, even half of CHRISTIANS think that good people of different or NO faith will still go to heaven); and most Christians will assert that they'll be incapable of sinning once they reach heaven, so there's no point to threatening them with Hell.

And it can't be for retribution -- central to the concept of crime is the HARM done; and by definition God CANNOT be harmed -- certainly not by us.

So I ask you: What's the point?

I want to experience the good side of partying and fast-paced days and a lively nightlife. It seems like my friends ave a great time with some beautiful girls in the situations. However, it's just not me. I would feel (and know from experience) completely uncomfortable in a club or bar setting.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could have the cool stuff of hanging out and having fun without having to be miserable at a club?

but come unglued at the very mention of Jesus? Religion is religion and its ALL nonsense right? I thought that an atheist should act rationally and never get angry. After all, it was evolutionarily useless to become so mad, unless it preserved your life. So why the anger?

I am not trying to come off as a b*tch, but I would really like to know. Since you do not believe in God, nor do you seem to want to learn about Him, why come into a religion based board?

Are you just trying to p*ss off Christians? If so, I'm sorry, but that's a little immature. I had friends in high school who did that. Perhaps you are high-schoolers, but I find that hard to believe b/c the majority of you write well and do not seem illiterate about the real world.

My boyfriend is an Agnostic and he would NEVER come in here to discuss religion with people. He doesn't care what other people believe. Why do you?

Should each day of the week be set up for a different topic?
This way we wouldn't be stuck in front of a tube waiting for an appropriate query rather than reading a lot of repeats. That way it would free us up from the hit and miss trajectory.
Saturday would be a free for all silliness day, just because it is the weekend.

the Military..Didn't in the Bible Christians fought wars all the time..right? God have plenty of opportunity to tell them not too..why did he allow his followers back then to fight wars, but not now? refuting something that they don't believe even exists? Many will attribute their intentions as caring for those poor, delusional people...to help them realize their hope is completely ill-founded. We see this "proof" used all the time. But who really looked around and, with at first an atheist/agnostic stance, decided to believe in God because it was just "impossible" for the universe to have come about by "chance?"

The only people this argument influences are the people who ALREADY believe...

Interestingly, observing the natural world and understanding it has led people AWAY from religion.
