but come unglued at the very mention of Jesus? Religion is religion and its ALL nonsense right? I thought that an atheist should act rationally and never get angry. After all, it was evolutionarily useless to become so mad, unless it preserved your life. So why the anger?

independent 009--but WHY on earth could a comment such as 'you're going to hell' (from an unqualified source i might add) even bother you? THIS is the type of thing I don't get! You don't believe so why not just blow it off like previously stated "big foot'.??

gorgeoustxwoman--no one is qualified to judge you.........why do you care that "they" think you're going to a fictional place when you're going to be worm food? I find that silly.

Good question. The other religions have a romantic lilt to them being foreign and distant. Even the Dalai Lama has said that westerners consider Buddhism to be exotic. On the other hand, many like me have had this stuff shoved down their throats all there lives. Besides being unconvinced, they are resentful. My resentment comes from years of Catholic training and from living in the Bible Belt (actually pronounced Babel Belt in the south.)

We don't 'come unglued at the very mention of Jesus'. We just get a little testy when you people throw your 'truth' at us as though you are the only ones on the face of the planet who could possibly be right.
Buddhists and Muslims are not constantly telling us we are going to hell. They don't tell us how special they are because they are saved. they don't try to make their religion the law of the land. they've never asked to have their prayers taught to first graders in public schools. They are not typically hypocrites.
You need more reasons I can give you plenty.

As a Buddhist I find the teachings of the Buddha to be very rational. I think that's why I have more in common with Atheists and Pagans. The Dalai Lama is also a major science geek and feels that if science disproves anything taught in buddhism then it should be struck from the text. That's pretty rational to me.

Christianity and Jesus are too often confused for each other. Christianity in practice today is not the same as what Jesus taught. Not at all.
We also tend to know more about that than the other religions. (Tend)
Buddha is a lot different from the others, though...

And it doesn't occur to you that Christians' behavior might have something to do with this?
Show me the Buddhist equivalent of Leanne. C'mon.
There are some Muslims with the same behavior problems the Christians have, and I come equally "unglued" at them (of course rational the entire time - I don't agree that atheists act irrationally at the mention of Jesus' name).

I don't agree with Islam either. That is not the major religion in my country and most of the posters here are Christian.
Who says anger is only good when it is to save your life? Recent research shows getting angry can help you make better decisions.

We most often gauge our response to the tone of the question... ANY religion that wants to have a serious discussion will be met with such a response... On the flip side, anyone who wants to blindly throw dogma at us and expect us to swallow it should expect the type of answers they get...

Most of us are not big fans of Mohammed, either, actually.
However, until Buddhists start trying to take away our freedomds or fly planes into our buildings or oppress women (okay, so they do this to some degree, but I complain about that, too, and it's really more the Confucians at fault), we won't have the same emotional response.
Oh yeah, I also happen to be particularly bitter because of past encounters with Christian groups.

I have often mentioned the name of Jesus without coming unglued. You funny.
I happen to like Jesus. But he had some weird followers who made him into a god. His only intention was to reform the Jewish religion.
Your quesition is rather odd. It's the church people who get angry. I can tell from the hate emails I get (which I do not respond to).

Bad personal experience with the fundamental movement in America. Also, they feel like they have answered a lot of fundamentalist's questions before and have given up trying to change their minds.
