Romaji

The "weird symbols" are:
Hiragana ひらがな(平仮名)
Katakana カタカナ(片仮名)
Kanji かんじ(漢字)

The symbols are called Kanji and they come from ancient China. There are three forms of writing with these:

Kanji
Hiragana
Katakana.

There is another one that is with normal letters, it called Romanji, but it's still japanese

it's called romaji. the weird symbols have other names like hiragana and katakana and of course, the hard ones, kanji which are simplified chinese characters. note, it is romaji, NOT romanji.

This is probably hiragana or katakana - phonetic script without any kanji (the more complex-looking Chinese characters that are words in themselves.)

it's called romaji, but you will not become fluent in japanese with just romaji
