Why is it that cigarettes are advertised in magazines and things, yet alcohol is advertised basically every where. Both are addictive drugs, what makes alcohol so much better that it can be advertised anywhere and everywhere, while cigarettes can't. Isn't that sort of a double standard on products? What's your opinion on this?

I saw a movie on PBS the other night. It was a hospital setting. A Jehovah's Wittness couple gave birth to an RH negative baby, but refused the blood transfusion required to prevent his retardation, suffering, and possible death.

Then, Children's Services came along and took the descision out of the parents' hands and had the transfusion done. The parent's were desolate. They believed that by exchanging the baby's blood, his soul was now doomed for eternity.

I am not a Jehovah's Witness, and I don't know much about them, but should the state have the right to interfere with a person's religious convictions? Where does it stop? When should it start?

I don't have an answer....what do you guys think?

I'm a Japanese speaker. Teach me English.

Past tense, Past Perfect, Present Perfect always give me hard time. They are sometimes really confusing.

My English Book says,
「The criminal has been in prison for 10 years. 」 is OK
「The criminal has been in prison for 10 years but he is free now」 is not correct.
The criminal's prison life is over. so It should be past tense of WAS for that sentense.

I found this term on the same text book.
He had worked for 30 years until she retired.

Why is Past Perfect used in this term? Because his job is over now. He is no longer working. That's why I think the verb should be (WORKED).

I'd like you to explain those terms.
Thank you in adance.

Since the pray to images of the Virgin Mary, saints and also make images of Christ.

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me

and from the Qu'ran

17:22: Do not associate another deity with God.

What i know:

1. Porns and sex crimes simutaniously went up
Only in the US, where rape reporting just changed. Elsewhere rape went WAY down. There is a self-studied 90%+ connotation between porn up and rape down.

2. Sex offenders always have porn.
Sex offenders can also like porn. This isn't proof, government studys to prove its proof have all failed.

3. Violent porn causes sexual violence.
This should be a given... Anything next to violence is going to cause violence of some sort!

4. Who cares!, real women are humiliated/tortured.
Cartoon porn prevents all that.

Objectification - Sadly true. But overall, porn seems to be doing more good then bad. Lots of good things have side-effects. I want to know that most of porn is bad.

Porn makes phychos rape, porn should go away! Here's an analogy. People have an allergy to latex, latex makes them suffer. So should latex be outlawed? No, because latex does good too! Im stubborn about this point of view, so arguing is futile.

These are the circumstances:
1) You meet this dashingly fine young man, with a slightly feminine appeal to him.
2) He, already looking slightly feminine, blows kisses to people and speaks in a feminine way (i.e. saying things like "like, OMG" or something)
3) He doesn't flirt with anyone seriously, and you may or may not be interested in him... but he seems gay.
4) You can't tell if he's interested in you (female) or not, or just men, because he, again, does not flirt with anyone. or even mention his status.
5) So... now the facts: you think he may be strictly gay, but are not sure. He's feminine, but he might just be metro or something.

So you want to ask if he's gay to be sure if you are reading the right signals and so you won't make him uncomfortable by flirting if he's not interested in women at all... so is it acceptable to blatantly ask if he's interested in men?

I'm not sure. I wouldn't ask outright, but it'd be a whole lot easier to avoid awkwardness after.
