--is Catholic--
Thank you for your kind comments. Given what you have written, I am going to recommend that you read DEUS CARITAS EST which really takes an summarizes the main thrust of the points that you made (especially PART II CARITAS).

From time to time I worship with a community of Catholics who come out of the Middle East (Melkite Catholics) so I have a great respect for your journey that you are on.
I know of no religious body that promotes science and education as much as the Catholic Church. It is fundamental to our way of life that there is nothing that causes science, reason, and philosophy to be opposed to the Catholic Faith. Both faith and science tell us about the world around us, and we as Catholics are instructed to learn science, reason, philosophy, and law and not simply religion. For 2000 years the Church has been a store house of all human knowledge, promoting education for the uneducated, and developing the study of science and philosophy. It is a shame that most people, unlike you, do not know how much the Church has sought to advance science and education throughout history. Even Martin Luther who broke from the Church wrote in his later years, hinting that he might have made a mistake "The devil has mislead the people into the belief that schooling is useless since the exit of the monks, nuns, and priests. As long as the people were caught in the Papacy, every purse was open for churches and schools, the doors of these latter were widespread for the free reception of children who could almost be forced to receive the expensive training given within their walls" and also "We experience it daily, that the people are seven times worse today than ever before under the Papacy; they are more avaricious, more unchaste, more envious more intemperate, more dishonest"
The Church has always been at the forefront of opposition to cruelty and degrading treatment. It is important to promote a situation in the world where the death penalty is no longer a necessity. Prisoners never should be treated evil for the sake of vengeance. It has always been a teaching of the Church that we should seek to care for, pray for, and help to bring prisoners out of prison. All people, even those who do evil, have dignity and we are tasked with helping them to reclaim their dignity.
Catholic are instructed never to use the Gospel as a stick, we do not seek out the poor and say we will help you if you believe. Rather we seek to help the poor first, feeding and clothing them first. The Gospel is what causes us to wish to cloth, feed, and educate others. If people wish to be taught about God, then they will be.
The deep ancestry of my family was not Catholic. They were poor and caught in the tribal warfare of the Germanic peoples and Anglo Saxons peoples. Then the Church came. Over 2000 years how many people have been clothed? How many peace deals between tribes have been put in place? How many people have been educated? How many people who have been hurting, been abused, and poorly treated have been given back their dignity?
There is a saying that you will know the Catholics by their love.
Conversely, it is the greatest shame to Catholics when they do not live up to their faith and instead bring darkness.
Yet history is a witness and if one steps back and views history from afar (as you have and as atheists can have a good tendency to try to view history in this light), one can see a singular tower, a singular beacon of light that seeks to educate and help all peoples, and not simply people like themselves.
God bless you and your journey.

*blink* Wow, someone praising the Catholic Church! Thank you!
Catholics are like any other people. We sometimes do amazing things and we sometimes screw up beyond all belief. But, same as most religions, we have the goal to do the best we can, both as a group and as individuals.
As an institution, we've had our share of shame (yeah, the church has really gotten it wrong at times) but we also try to help make this world a better place.

i'm sorry. it could have been super in case you found out those issues on your individual even nonetheless it would look somebody it telling you lies approximately your faith. the main Humane business enterprise interior the international has been on one section or yet another of each occasion of Ethnic cleansing interior the advert callendar. they have counseled conflict torture and homicide interior the call of the Church and that's catholic Doctrine to do no longer something to ease the sufferring of people who won't convert to their faith. The business enterprise that has branched out to welcome human beings of all walks of existence won't enable women individuals to take a management place in any church affairs. that's doctrine teaches Catholics to offer up absolutely everyone who would not carry catholic ethics, maximum specifically Scientists and Homosexuals. No tension in humanity is extra of an impediment to training or technological awareness than the Catholic church as they're the main staunch supporters of the theory technological awareness desires to return to words with the perspectives of the Church. Your Bastion of Humanity and technological awareness protests examine that would desire to treatment painful illnesses extremely than re-comparing their stance on ethics.
