Sociology - April 2007

[Selected]: All categories Social Science Sociology

In mammals the original lifestyle consists of totally seggregated male and female spaces as represented by one of the oldest mammals ----- the elephants.

Mammals have no social pressures to do so. Males and females instinctively prefer that.

It is the same-sex sexual bonds that keep these male-only/ female only spaces strong and livable.

However, some males (around 5%) are exclusively 'heterosexual' (sic) & they need to live with females. Since they can't they become loners (as in elephants).

But, in species (such as horses or lions) where the females become weak (due to weakened same-sex bonds) these 5% males + 7% to 10% others who are predominantly so-called 'heterosexual', control these female spaces as harems.

That's the only heterosexual space that we know of in the natural mammalian setting (including tribal humans).

Males, especially love and need their male-only spaces. Destroying these spaces by heterosexualising them is the bigggest but unacknowledged....

Or vice versa?

Overall, I think more people need to be selfless -- be a giver than a receiver, practice random acts of kindness or even volunteer. In other words, they should think of others and not themselves. It just seems like we live in a self-centered society. People need to redirect their focus. What do you all think?

Why is there no Men's studies under the Social Science category? Men's roles have changed but society seems to neglect this and the issues that Men face. A few examples...
1. Men facing challenges as single parents
2. Discrimination of Men through various government agencies
3. Why is there no help for Men who are victims of violence through spousal abuse?

Guys seem to have there little PMS moments too. For instance my guy friend at work has a little attitude sometimes when I come in, which is tolerable but its like dang he must be PMSING (in a guy way)! One day he seemed to be in a bad mood and I asked him whats wrong he said I don't want to talk about it. I told him Ok Im sorry and just left him alone! I'm sorry guys but that drives me nuts when men do that! Never want to talk about anything bothering them just let there emotions go to the back and not express it which is not good. If you keep letting anger build up your going to explode and it might not be for the best.

Why can't men express their feelings? It is very annoying!

I have a genuine desire to help other people. Sometimes I cry because I see so much suffering. However its hard and I encountered some problems so far:

1) A few months ago a girl dropped her teddy. I got down, gave it to her and smiled. Her mother said a quick "Thanks" and got walked quickly. I assume she might think I was pedophile or something. I dont blame her. You might be reading this and be thinking Im lying to you.

2) Money issues. I made a promise to myself that if I ever win the lottery, I will give 95% of it to charity.

Sometimes I wish I were Batman, I know its inmature but like I said I really want to help people. What can I do?

Don't we live in a free nation? If we do, shouldn't a person be allowed to hire any man or woman he wants, for whatever reason? Shoudn't a man be allowed not to accept an applicant because the applicant has a nose ring, or a tatoo? And, because this is a free nation, shouldn't he be allowed not to hire someone because the applicant has blonde hair, and he doesn't like people with blonde hair?

People should be allowed to hire whomever they wish, for whatever reasons. After all, they are the ones paying their employees.

If you don't agree, I want a good, reasonable, sensible explanation showing why people should not be allowed to exercise their freedom of thought and action, formulate their own opinions, and hire whoever they want, regardless of race, color, gender, or even hair color.

Please, no name calling, no diatribes, no irrational thoughts. Please, let's keep this calm, cool and rational. If you can't be these, don't bother answering.

I want solid evidence. Specefic occurrences. I don't want graphs showing how men make more than women. I want cold proof that a woman does not make as much money as men do for the sole reason that they are not men, the SOLE reason. I don't want to find out that the women in your examples refused to do a certain thing that the men would do. I want specefic events and evidence of discrimination. No opinion. No discussions of sentiment. I want to make this perfectly clear:

Give me some, unaltered, unabridged, credible, true evidence of a woman being discriminated against in the past 5 years for the sole reason that they were female. Cases involving people who were later punished (for it is a violation of the law) don't count.

My friend, who used to be a junky, says that heroin effects the way you think about the world. Junkies seem to be quite paranoid and cynical. I'm wondering whether this happens as a direct physiological result of taking the drug or is it a more complex result of having to find money to fund the drug combined with the constant threat of going into cold turkey.

I've asked my friend but he's just one of those people that gets really confused by questions like that. He’s got severe dyslexia.

£75,000 a year is what a typical GP, lawyer, corporate executive, or stock broker brings in a year. My question is then, see if you can name some of the typical neighbourhoods in and around London, or in which particular commuter towns in the Home Counties where people of this sort proliferate and earn these kind of annual salaries. Thanks!
