Heroin is an extremely addictive chemical. While the constant need to have money to feed the next fix may occupy much of a junkies mind, the real problem is the physiological effects of the drug on the body. This is a substance that makes you PHYSICALLY ill, when you need more of it in your system. Then that, accompanied by the constant threat of not having enough money for the next fix turns a junkie into a cynical, paranoid, belligerent, idiot who'll do WHATEVER they have to in order to get high.

Sorry, i just got this from the net, it's a shame, my wife is a drug worker, but overseas at the moment.
Heroin is extremely addictive. Not only is Heroin addictive it is also fatal. Just like any poison out there, Heroin will slowly kill you as you build up an addiction to it. At first you could only find Heroin in major metropolitan areas, but now it has infiltrated all areas of the world. People are
becoming addicted to Heroin everyday. More and more, this
dangerous drug is claiming the lives of people everywhere.
Most experts say that the drug (Heroin) is the most addictive drug on
the streets. They also say that it is the most deadly. Spencer
Recovery Center has been dealing with the drug since it first
became popular. Heroin addicts have been receiving treatment for
this addictive poison from us for years.
This drug is extremely powerful. It affects two major aspects of the
human being. First it numbs the body of most all feeling. It puts the
body into a dream like state where the effects of the mind take
place. The user might experience hallucinations or they might
experience a complete thoughtlessness. However the heroin drug
affects the user there is one thing for certain, the user will want
more. The addiction is almost instant. As soon as the user has
finished their very first dose of the drug, they immediately begin to
obsess about getting more. This leads most people down paths,
which they never thought they would go down. The heroin drug
more than likely will lead people into a life of crime. It can also
affect people in such a way that they would do things they never
thought they could ever do. Some people end up prostituting
themselves in order to get more. Some people will begin to steal
from their own family. The heroin drug not only affects the user but
it also affects the people that care for and love the person using
the drug.
The herion addict begins to break ties with family members. This
leads the addict into a lonely, isolated death. It sounds as if this
drug is too powerful to be stopped. It isn't! Spencer Recovery
Center has been assisting herion addicts for years, helping them
break free from the chains created by the heroin drug. Although
the heroin drug has claimed many lives, Spencer Recovery Center
has helped saved many lives from the grips of heroin addiction.
Breaking free from heroin addiction is an extremely difficult
process, but it can be done. We have many success stories about
patients of ours who have put down the heroin drug for good and
walked out of our facility a free person. We have helped these
people get a hold on life once again. We have helped them mend
broken family ties, payback debts, and become responsible
members of society. The heroin drug is not to strong for the
recovery program at Spencer Recovery Center to handle.

Heroin is a physical, psychological addiction. I believe there is also a physiological component to the addiction of heroin. Not only the physical cravings of the drug which are real, the withdrawal which is rarely life threatening however very unpleasant. The habit, rituals and environment which is established is a big part of it for some. God bless****

I had to do a drug awareness course for my job. I couldn't believe how inexpensive drugs are. Ok if your not working and have no income then anything is expensive. But it was literally a few pounds for a bag of heroin. Drugs(be it coke or coffee) effect your mind not the cost of them!

I am paranoid and cynical anyway and I never touched the stuff, I would guess he would be that way with or without the drug. I have done many drugs in my life and they all just accentuate your already existing personality as far as I can tell.

Truthfully, the vast majority of people are under extreme stress to get money to support their lives and others. You don't see them ultimately like you have described your friend. As a healthcare provider I can tell you that it's the drug that does this.

without making a three page answer I can say from experience not from Heroin but from another form of addiction. When you are addicted to a drug..that is all you think about is your next fix. That's all you think about, care about, that is all that's on your mind.So you don't think about other things..family (except to get money) all you think about is your next fix..where to get it,money to get it and then getting high.So of course their paranoid, and cynical.Paranoid that they are not gonna get a fix and cynical probably due to begging or the pursuit of money.

Glad your friend has given it up, but all drugs affect behaviour and thinking. They used to be referred to as "mind-altering", and it happens, because they destroy brain cells, which cannot be replaced. I used to work among users, who took various drugs, and they looked healthy, but my guess is that their health won't last. I am always happy to hear that someone has packed it in.
