-Al-Qaeda claims to be a force fighting for Islam which is undersiege by non-believers

-The Government says they are Muslim Terrorists bent on murdering non-Muslims

-The media says they are Muslim terrorists slaughtering innocent people left and right

A lot of criminal organizations have somewhat benevolent origins. Al-Qaeda is no exception. It started out fighting against opressive regimes and to this day it is still fighting opressive regimes, at least in its own eyes.

Also like a lot criminal organizations, Al-Qaeda is very ritualistic with its religous customs. Take a look at the practices of the Sicilian Mafia or Japanese Yakuza.

Religion is the binding factor between the members of Al-Qaeda not the driving force. I think its safe to say the driving force is a thirst for power and that their motivations are politcal not religious.

The US Government officialy defines the Baby Boom Generation as all individuals born between 1946-1964. They really don't get to specific about either Generation X or Y. What years do you think should incorporate these three vastly different generations and why? Whether it's the self-centred baby boomers, or the slacking, cynical generation Xer's, or the over-protected, sheltered, community minded, "I'm entitled" generation Y types, every generation gets hanged with a label. Please think of this when trying to define an answer. It will help in trying to figure what historical events defined their generation, and ultimately which birth years seperate them.

Does anyone know any unique rituals or rites of passage of other cultures or a relgion that people are unfamiliar with? I have a project and I'm stumped. Heres what it is in her words:

Research and write about a ritual (or rite of passage) in another culture. The topic needs to be something other than what we already know. Stay away from Catholic rituals or anything else common to the US. (Sweet 16, graduation, marriage) We are familiar with these traditions.

We're both in college. He's a senior (graduating '07) and I'm a sophomore. He's been a great friend and inspiration to me, and I'm sad that he's leaving soon. I really admire him/like him, but dont have the courage to tell him EXACTLY how I feel. I've spent my life having to say goodbye to people that I care about, and here I am yet again--trying to let go. I'll move on just like I've always had to do, but it's hard.

If you have ever been in my situation, would you please tell me your story? Maybe I'll find comfort in knowing that I'm not alone in the way that I feel. Even if you've never been through this, just share your thoughts.

So heres my question... Im reading yahoo news and Michael Jordan and his wife is getting a divorce. She is about to get 100 million or something like that from him just cuz she was married to him.... Is that fair? Now I know some women will say yes because she had to put up with mens bs but... this is MJ we're talking about. He's rich and always was rich. She didn't have to lift a finger. All his money came from HIS talent, HIM playing basketball, HIM making endorsments, HIS name. I would understand if she had something to do with that, but she has absolutely NOTHING to do with that... wheres the fairness in that???

The United States has one of the highest rates of infant male circumcision http://www.cirp.org/library/statistics/USA/ and also one of the highest rates of HIV infection http://data.unaids.org/pub/GlobalReport/2006/2006GR-PrevalenceMap_en.pdf in the developed world, suggesting that circumcision is having exactly the opposite effect. Conversely, Finland and Japan http://www.circinfo.org/hiv.html#lies have some of the lowest rates of circumcision and also some of the lowest rates of HIV/AIDS.

Whenever we're introduced to someone new, the first question people ask is "oh, what do you do"....like, it defines who that person is.

This has become just something customary, that's just asked. If you really think about it though it seems like we're actually providing people with a "quick take" of what we're about. But, in reality, I don't think people generally define themselves by what they do, even when they like their jobs. It's just one aspect of who they are. Some people even hate what they do for a living and consider it a mere necessity that pays the bills. So, what then?

When we meet someone new, isn't asking "oh, what do you do??" just as arbitrary as saying something like, "oh, I like raisins, what about you"?? Do you think people really want to know what a person does for a living, is it just cordial, do we use it to judge what kind of person they probably are, are we just robots of macro social etiquette ideals??
