Humans love to break concepts (or people in this case) into categories. Because these categories often function in an us/them dichotomy, pertinent information will thus be generalized to all members of each category. Your personal category usually receives the best information, as well as a better assumption that individual members can vary. Outgroups often are castigated with negative stereotypes, and less belief in member heterogeneity. This is all from the personal perspective.
From the social perspective, two main efforts can (with great effort) and should be made, aside from simply fostering empathy. The first would be to attempt integrate the populations. Exposure, ensured to occur in a positive format, works to sensitize people to the fact the individual characteristics trump those of the group. The second is to encourage positive group categorizations. This is done through everyday interactions, as well as representations in the media. Associating negative connotations with groups is the first step in racism.
Read this carefully (as not to commit a naturalistic fallacy)- while the seeds of categorization seem inherent in humans, with understanding and effort any racist trends can be reversed and remedied.

A big problem is "Silence".

On the surface, it sounds good to socially scorn those with hate in their hearts. However, this has a shaken "Soda-Pop Bottle" effect.

Law suits, cencerships, and "Equal Opportunity" laws force society to work together. No doubt this is good. Except for the person who harbors hate and dislike behind a veil of silence. We all can feel the bad vibes coming from this person; although little is said to offend, there is that vibe.

Soon this vibe coming from the hater becomes apparent to the person or group and they then cannot confront the issue because there's no proof. This causes them to fear others who don't hate them and traps them in a world of unknown always questioning "friend or foe"??? So, this tention creates them to hate those with whom they preceive to hate them.

In short, it's much like the "Cold Wars" between the USA and USSR, except categorized by a specific group. What is needed is a safe enviroment for the hater to heal themselves and for the person being discriminated against to find dignaty through being part of the healing process.

The best is to break the invisible spectacles of the past and put on a new pair in order that all may see one colour and low and behold if all see one colour, then there is no difference and everybody will learn to live in acceptance and tolerance. Accept the person for who is and learn to tolerate the differences.

To prejudge a person is to not allow yourself the luxury of seeing the difference in folks the way that God intended. It's a crying shame.

the answer is... you can't.

people are so stuck in their ways.

WHILE america is no longer segregated, there's still a lot of racism in america. PEOPLE are stuck on the thought that whites are superior. its sad.. even minorities have bought that way of thinking. racism can never be eradicated in america.

The problem is that people everywhere try to put everybody into separate categories. If quit separating people into their specific groups and giving them artificial cultural attributes.as opposed to individual attributes, maybe the problems would be lessened.

I think if you got rid of fear you would definatley get rid of racism...I think the fear of the unknown, people from diffrent countries have diffrent cultures but we tend to pick out the people who look diffrent from us as we are not comfortable with it.
