Massive Difference!!

1) psychology is a science that deals with the complex processes of the brain and the behaiviour it causes. Psychology is about trying to understand how and why thought relates to behaviour and responses and visa versa. Some of this behaviour may have led to the discovery of sociology.

2) Sociology is based on the way humans have "constructed" their environment and the analysis of this environment. It does not focus on the nature of human behaviour from a scientific view nor does it really explain in detail the underlying factors for human thought and behaviour without referencing to psychological theory.

Sadly, the other answers are wrong or mostly wrong. To start with we can warm up with the notion that sociology and psychology have argued historically over nature vs nurture. Psychology being almost solely organic based is interested in man's nature based on their understanding of the brain. Sociologist, more based and grounded in social interaction would greatly favor nurture.

To say that sociology is the study of groups and psychology is the study of the individual is completely wrong. Sociolgy has provided a variety of models and notions in regards to the concept of self and the individual. If nothing else look up the I, Me, and Mind by George Herbert Mead, a much better model than that of Freud's Id, Ego, Superego.

Sociologist appreciate and find that the individual is extremely important. However, what differs with sociology is that the picture is more in depth because humans don't live on islands in isolation but in social context with interaction therefore while we have individual concerns we also open up to macro concerns such as social structure, social change, stratification, culture, race, ethnicity, conflict, and the constructs, limitations/freedoms, and processes that these involve as the individual grows, develops, and completes the life cycle.

Of the two, psychology is more popular and trendy, but for the complete story, sociology with much older and historical roots is much more difficult to grasp, broader, and more accute with the discussion of human behavior and those behaviors reasons.

I'm in complete agreement with Andrei. I just wanted to add that there are many different "types" of psychology, one of them being social psychology which focuses on human behavior as well as how and why people interact the way they do. I am currently a psych major but I have taken a couple of soc classes and I feel as if there is a definite difference between the two fields.

Both of the answers above are correct.

There is some overlap between psychology and sociology. There is a field of social pschology that examines the effects of group dynamics on individuals. It is commonly used in industrial psychology and the study of leadership.
