people commit crimes for some of these reasons: economic; power; greed; anger; jealousy; passion; boredom, fear, peer pressure, opportunity; vandalism; failure of self-direction; Lack of moral judgement and character; Because they do not see the benefits of adhering to conventional social values; A pervading emphasis on being successful; The opinion that everyone commits some type of crime; The more that people perceive a particular criminal behavior as occurring, the less likely they will view it as a crime. and lastly lack of adequate punishment for crime.

Yes they should be Names & Shamed. If they are big enough to Rape & Kill then they should be treated as a adult would be. That includes the punishment, If they commit murder they should be locked up for life and not just a couple months in a detention center. As for naming & shaming the parent well i dont actually agree. Not all Kids that commit crimes come from broken homes Some parents do all they can to ensure their children have a good start in life and are taught right from wrong, And when they turn to crime there really is not much they can do about it. Other than give the little shits a good hiding............... But oh we cant do that in th UK anymore can we, Parents dont stand a chance in this day and age, Because if you slap your kid for doing wrong you can get arrested, What message is that law sending out to our children. Kids today know that they can have their parents arrested for doing what has been done for thousands of years, and all they get is a nice little ASBO Designer label for the crime they commit. Look at the 2 scum bags who killed poor Jamie Bulger, They are out living their lifes with new names etc mixing with everyday people when they should have been locked up for life and the key thrown away. what was their punishment..... Oh yea they was locked up in a holiday camp for a few years and given a pat on the back and set free.......... Wrong Wrong Wrong its about time they gave out punishment to fit the crime, * just read page 36 & 37 in the sun today this is just proof the goverment have got it all wrong, and teenagers know that they rule and there is nothing that their parents can do about it.

I believe people commit crimes because of their selfish myopic and parochial interests and inability or unwillingness on the part of society to do something. 'Evil men succeed when Good men do nothing'. Before someone commits a crime he/she first does risk-benefit analysis by first evaluating what he/she will gain from the crime to be committed. Then he/she will ask himself/herself 'what I am doing will somebody see? If somebody sees will I be identified? If I am seen and identified will somebody do something? If somebody will do something then it means the risk is higher than the benefit and the person will therefore not commit the crime. But as long as people are not vigilant and most us are living in a state of 'I-don't-carism' and the criminal justice system is still in its problematic state, people will commit crimes.

Because the society is not able to prevent crimes. When the person has no possibility to work, to take part in social activities, to receive a medical help, to have enough money for living, to get an education, to pay for a flat or room - in general when the person doesn't feel like a normal member of the society he lives in - he has no choose but only to commit crimes.

One of the reasons I think is because of poor choices being made. Another is laziness. For example, someone who doesn't have a job and doesn't bother to find ways to get a job will be without money so they will choose to steal what they need in order to survive. Or they may choose to spend the money they make working, if they work, on drugs and alcohol for wild parties and not have anything left to pay the rent or bills and decide to go out and hold up a store or rob a bank. This is a mixture of laziness and poor decision making. A prime example of poor decision making would be someone in the corporate level who cheats in order to get ahead of someone else who tries to play it straight. There are millions of examples to look at for reasons to commit crime. But I think it all boils down to evil vs. good in the world. The evil will always be around tempting us all to do the wrong thing, but if we seek after the good and noble things, we can overcome the evil forces that seek to rob us of our freedom and dignity. There are many ways to do this, but I think the only successful way is to follow the teachings of Jesus and let God be our source of strength. Crimes will continue, as will the evils of this world until Jesus returns and life on earth will end as we know it. Until then, keep looking up and seek after the good that life has to offer through Jesus Christ.

According to Merton people commit crimes due to anomie - which is the discrepancy b/w the goals held by society and the inability to reach those goals.
So if a persons goal is to be rich (THE AMERICAN DREAM) then they might rob a bank to fufill this goal...
so they accept the goal but not the means that society says they should use to get the goal.
ie you get rich by working hard
criminal says I do work hard and I'm in debt
so they reject the prescribed means and find an alternative way to reach their goal.

http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/important-theories-in-criminology-why-people-commi.html
says there are several theories for committing crimes:
Rational choice - after weighing pros and cons, someone finds the pros are better
Social disorganization - areas with few social standards breed fewer morals
Strain - lack of ability to obtain socially expected abilities or opportunities
Social learning - people they associate with influence them
social control - most people actually would commit crimes, if it weren't for controls in society
Labeling - people just do what they normally would, and people in power simply label them criminals
Biology/genetics/evolution - physical conditions cause criminal activity
