You are just thinking you want to help others but you don't actually do. That's the problem of you.

There are many different ways to help others, and it isn't always with the big things but rather the little things that can make a difference. So the woman didn't gush over your action, so what? You did a nice thing and should take pleasure in the fact that you were helping others. If you do it in order to gain a reward, even if it's a smile, then you are motivated by the reward rather than helping others.
Volunteer at a senior's home to read to people who can no longer do it for themselves. Make fifty sandwiches and pass them out to homeless (I actually had a student who did that; amazing guy). Do anything that will help the community within which you live.
Batman? Helpful? I'm a big fan of the Dark Knight myself, but let's face it, he wasn't exactly a nice guy. There's a reason he was called the Dark Knight. Don't try to be a superhero. Just be someone who cares about others and makes an effort; no matter how small, to help those around him.

Your thoughts are probably the same as mine. I really don't know what you can do specifically but make sure you choose some type of charitable work you want to do and spend time getting the education and other resources you'll need to be good at helping people. That way you will be nearly sure to not be hurting people with the best intentions.
I also sometimes get paranoid about people accusing me of being a pedophile too. Sometimes I wonder if the molesters and other criminals have succeeded at hurting society. They have had the power to turn the good into bad. Surely It is sad and frustrating for everyone who doesn't have a wife and kids to go home to at night and just wants to be part of the human family.

It is an OK reaction for stranger, you got acknowledged. Stop worrying about what she might have been thinking. Next time Just tell them they drop an item so they can be aware of it,
instead of you picking up the object your self . As far as helping people when you win lottery, that kind of luck might not
be attainable. Just try to do a volunteer work with the local charity, NGO , charitable group or be mentor for some one. It does not have to be monitory help, you can do it with your skill. Just do it from your heart not for getting a reward for it. Check the web sites.

If you have a real genuine desire to help people like you say.. Why not try volunteering in your community or a place nearby in need of help?
I have volunteered at a few soup kitchens as well as on a Indian reservation rebuilding homes and i must say both were quite wonderful experiences.
Yes donating money is wonderful, but donating time in my eyes is even better!

Do some volunteer work. There are tons of people who need our help! You can become a big brother/sister, visit a children's hospital or a retirement home (they have adopt a grandparent) work at a soup kitchen, etc. None of these things requires a real great sacrifice on your part but will make a world of difference. Good luck!

Go to your local food pantry, Salvation Army, or homeless shelter and give your time. Participate in a neighborhood clean up project, or start your own. Adopt a needy family. Teach someone to read. Teach someone to use the computer. (the Salvation Army offers computer classes to underprivilaged people) Help out a troop of Scouts. Be a Big Brother. You can't help everyone, but you can help someone. Good luck!

Thats how I feel, and I'm in high school. I also have a passion for health and fitness, so it's become my goal to become a great personal trainer, and maybe even open up a gym that isn't boggled down w/fine print crap that tricks people and makes them not want to work out.

You don't have to do some huge and public great deed to help others. Just being a good friend or co-worker, or family member is a start.
Little deeds like you did, and having good thoughts and intentions are also a positive thing.
I don't know if you have any way to volunteer in your community, but perhaps that would be one way you could help others. I, too like to help others and sometimes kindnesses are misinterpreted by others or not appreciated, but don't be discouraged. Don't expect instant praise or approval from others, if that is your reason for helping others, it is the wrong reason. Good luck to you.

There are hundreds of charities crying out for help. Offer your services in any way you can. Just going to an old age home and chatting to the inmates. Setting up a second hand book stall or clothes stall and selling them on behalf of a charity. or collecting for them [clothes and books]. Offer to drive disabled and oap's around.Adopt an orphan or several at an orphanage and visit them and give them gifts on birthdays, or hold birthday parties for them.
