I have rarely met people who think for themselves. So many people are influenced in a major way in how they think and feel by the media, government, and many other sources. Most have absolutely no clue how much of who they are is what they have been manipulated and influenced to be. What can be done to allow for more people to think more independantly?

Most of today's music and movies are either for teens or... hmm... people with low needs. Why is it that although the commercially important population is 18-49 years old, all the big hits are for people below this age? Teens only have pocket money... Do only they buy movies and CDs?

To be honest, I hate and want to curse those snub and diss me. So many ppl from my high school think I am not smart enough to go to the university I got acceptance to. And so many ppl behave so coldly toward me. i wanna "screw" what they think and say, but it is quite hard for me. What should I do to be benevolent enough to pardon those who snub and diss me?

I was a very shy, quiet kid in high school, and my high school life was quite depressing. Many kids in my class (my class consisted of about 80 ppl, a small school) kinda snubbed me, so I didn't have that many good friends. i couldn't get any girlfriends either.I was especially resigned in my AP English classes. I thought it was because my ENglish wasn't perfect, but it was more because I was not a good debater. Some ppl say i just don't have enough self-confidence. I felt like committing suicide several times in high school. I felt like a piece of $hit. An effing lucky kid, I got into a prestigious university, and I would like to get the following issues settled before I get there in September. I don't want the next 4 years of my life to be depressing!

1. I want to be a good debater and want to feel more comfortable when I speak in English. constructive help needed!
2. I want to be more outspoken and to socialize better with others. constructive help needed!

Thank you.

I'm not talking about just being cool and smart at the same time. I'm talking about the extremes of each spectrum.

There are tons of college geeks who think they're cool, but they're really not all that cool, so they definately aren't "ultimate cool."

There are different styles of ultimate coolness, but I think that probably in the US, at this time, the most recognizable "ultimate cool" is exhibited by certain rappers. There are many corny rappers, even though to the untrained, college, white-person eye, this often goes undetected or unrecognized.

So, for this purpose, let's take the hard, gangsta, thug image as being the ultimate, most recognized form of coolness. And let's remember, not just some dude who dresses up to look like this, but one who really IS this.

Now let's get to the smart part. I'm not talking about just-being-in-college type smart. I'm talking about the far end of the spectrum of smartness. People who study chemistry, physics, biology etc.

Is there anyone else who thinks the main cause of anti-social behaviour particularly among the younger offenders is status or popularity? Is it mainly about showing off to their peer group?

Well, from what I have heard, they just want to avoid them from being in love with them. But the thing is, i don't think these people would be likeable by both sexs. And well, the main thing might be, Why are people homophobic? i mean, are they just so insicure about their sexuality?

For example Christians are hooked on Jesus. Junkies are hooked on H. Both seem to take great delight in their thing, what's the difference? Health issues excluded please, both mental and physical; it's too easy to site concerns in each camp.'

I tried out last week at a soup van - there were about 25 volunteers including myself, and about 500 homeless people. I don't think I'll go back, I just felt lost within the sea of people. I had the feeling that it would have made no difference if I had been there or not. Sure, it sounds selfish of me, but the reason why I want to do volunteer work is to feel useful. Also, I'm not a very sociable person, so it was all a bit overwhelming. My family thought I might not be able to handle all the homeless people, but it turned out that I couldn't handle all the volunteers!! I need to find something else that makes me feel useful and needed, without making me want to run and hide. Any suggestions??
