Penicillin is hard to beat but for everyday life like the question asks, without a doubt the refridgerater/freezer. It allowed people the luxury of buying perishibles, making ice, saving leftovers

Daily life? In the United States it would have to be the highway system.

Before Eisenhower developed this plan (at least I think it was him), people were unable to easily get from city to city quickly by personal vehicle. It was the start of people getting out there to see wheat the rest of the country was like.

Air conditioning:) No, It could be assembly line style manufacturing, like Ford did, it allowed the "middle class" an opportunity to own things like cars, appliances, etc for first time.
It may also be the medical profession figuring out they needed to keep their instruments and patients sterile. (though think might have been a little longer than 100 yrs. , around Civil War time)
But I think I'd have to go w/ Penicillin over Jonas Salk (sp?) inventing the polio vaccine for my final answer.
