Absolutely. It's one of the most bizarre phenomena in human nature, from my perspective, however, it happens all the time.

I don't understand people who maintain contact with people who disrespect them, but it seems there is a personality type that flocks to the people who treat them the worst. And, in my experience, it is unfortunately all too common.

And, there is a personality type that feeds off the power they get from treating people with out respect who still hang around. It's sort of a groupie mentality. I think it happens most when a person who has some knowledge that other people want to have learns that s/he can keep people around better by treating them poorly.

Good question.

It's called being disrespectful and it is a way to mistreat others. I have never heard it called witholding respect, did you just coin that phrase? I am not controlled by disrespectful people, but I do steer clear of them as they usually have no respect for themselves, either.

Yes. And witholding affection is too. For us to withstand the great pain most of us have suffered in simply trying to be, we must consciously exercise our right to personal dignity and self-directed evolution.

As far as I am concerned, respect is a privilege that has to be earned. You can't just give someone respect because they demand it. If you don't feel respect then how can you possibly show it.

Gaining respect for yourself from others is a very powerful tool If you have the respect of others you are more likely to get them to do what you want them to do.

Why would you want to control anyone anyway?

No, unless you command a large amount of respect yourself, like a boss. But then that would hardly work with the same people long-term.

When one doesnt respect a person it means they are not acknowledging their existence thats how apartheid and british colonial rule worked. So those people could be controlled.Every person deserves respect irrespective of their caste, creed, colour etc thats a birthright in a society of humanity not necessarily human.

It depends the personality of the person you are trying to control, if that person wants to be "accepted" then by all means it is a way but if they don't give a **** about you then there is no way you will be able to control their actions... don't you agree?

It probably is but it is a bad way to control others. Plus trying to control others is not good either.

Only if the person would do anything to gain your respect. As for me, I would think you are a jerk. Why do you want to control anyone?
