I was a very shy, quiet kid in high school, and my high school life was quite depressing. Many kids in my class (my class consisted of about 80 ppl, a small school) kinda snubbed me, so I didn't have that many good friends. i couldn't get any girlfriends either.I was especially resigned in my AP English classes. I thought it was because my ENglish wasn't perfect, but it was more because I was not a good debater. Some ppl say i just don't have enough self-confidence. I felt like committing suicide several times in high school. I felt like a piece of $hit. An effing lucky kid, I got into a prestigious university, and I would like to get the following issues settled before I get there in September. I don't want the next 4 years of my life to be depressing!

1. I want to be a good debater and want to feel more comfortable when I speak in English. constructive help needed!
2. I want to be more outspoken and to socialize better with others. constructive help needed!

Thank you.

The best thing to do is practice if you are not good at debating you need to practice it. Aristotle said "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act but a habit." If you want to be good at something then practice. This includes socializing. Go to parties, and get away from the wall and talk to people. This really is the only way to overcome the two problems that you have. Every book I have read on this all boils down to practicing.

There are two issues you need to address. One is the smaller issue of debating skills. I would get to that later. Your first answerer gave you some good suggestions about that issue.

The most pressing issue is the depression. There is a test for how much mental health assistance you need. It is in regard to feelings of suicide. If you only thought about committing suicide, you are at one level. If you went so far as to have a plan for how to commit suicide, you are, or were at a more serious level.

Since you say the school you were accepted to is prestigious, they will have mental health professional(s) available to help you with your emotional issues and possibly medication, if needed to assist you in feeling better. Go to them and spill your guts. This service is usually included in the price of the school and always confidential. Go, find out if you need help and get it, if you do need it.

This emotional base will better serve your efforts to become a better debater and socializer as well.

unlike your considerably small high school, university offers a wide variety of groups for you to be a part of and learn from. i'm sure you'll find many people who speak your native language and will be happy to help with your english. i'm from a small town too, my graduating class had about 112, i know how difficult that environment can be. trust me, college is completely different!
