I'm not criticising, I just wasn't born with the sports gene and I have a hard time understanding the fanaticism about football, baseball, etc.... especially football though....

Why do we dump millions into prof. athlete's pockets? Couldn't we better spend that money on disease research or something. Why do/did we allow such salaries to swell to such huge numbers? Why are so many people addicted? Why do people trash their own cities when a team wins the Superbowl?

I currently live in the Uk, which will help with answering my question.

I want to know if hypnotism works? Is it possible for a hypnotist to set a trigger in my mind which will make me work. For example if i hear this a certain song, i dedicate my entire time working on books, studying ect. I feel my lack of concentration and other things getting in the way (computers ect) is making me fail my school work.

Can anyone help?

Ideally, how many true friends should a person have in order to be happy? What are the types of friends that one should have?

For example, I would say that outside my family, I could call 4 people my true friends (for reference, they are A, B, C, and D).

A is best for serious discussions about the world, and for a new perspective on many issues. We can (and do) have mindless fun also. For emotional situations, she may not agree with me, but she is a good listener.

B is automatically supportive if something is wrong, and she usually has a good solution. She likes my sense of humor the most.

C is so upbeat that I almost forget my emotions with him. If I am stressed, I always look for him. He is a practical mentor, who helps me make decisions about school.

D, like A, can have discussions, but still have fun doing nothing. Like B, he is emotionally supportive. Like C, he is always upbeat. I have not known him long, but he is the most likely to defend me.

I have an essay to do, but am unsure as the best way to approach it as it is so broad. The question is:-

Discuss the view that for the treatment of most mental disorders, psychological approaches are more effective than the use of medication.

Please only answer if you have knowledge of psychological theories/therapies.

Sitting here, as a paraplegic and being artistic I am cursed with a vivid imagination. I find myself looking at a beautiful women, or seeing some delightful children playing or look back at the way my brother died, and I think, "What if." Are they the worse words in the English language as they can only conjuror up possibilities that can never happen and bring with it the hurt that goes along with them. What do you think?

I'm interested in NLP, and think it can be very beneficial in counselling, and entertaining when used by the likes of Derren Brown. It's probably good for sales too, not that I enjoy being on the receiving end, particularly when what they're trying to do is blatently obvious.

I once had the MD of a company I worked for try his new NLP course techniques out on me. It was painful to witness. He wanted me to make the 'right' decision (cue banging the side of his hand down on the right side of the desk with every repetition of the word 'right'). I only really clicked, though, when he later started tapping me on the arm every time he said the same word. Needless to say, it didn't convince me. Has the world of business gone a little loopy over this? Do you have any similarly stupid/annoying experience of it?

I have recently lost my job, been dumped by my boyfriend, and have just been experiencing a lot of lows in my life. I constantly look for jobs, go on interviews, but never get picked. I try to talk to my friends but I still am not satisfied. I am not wanting them to tell me what I want to hear but I just don't get much from their advice. I constantly deal with feelings of hopelessness and guilt and quite often I think of what it would be like if I just wasn't here anymore. I would not commit suicide but it's on my mind. I know that that is NEVER an answer (mainly because I have kids) but I am just feeling like I am lost. I feel like no one understands me. I know that I probably need some kinda therapy but I can't afford therapy and I am not getting any type of health insurance so that's out for now. Am I having a breakdown or what? Why do I feel as if I need to do something but I have no idea what it is? Serious answers only please.

Well, I am Deaf, read lips, speak english and sign language. There are times when having conversation with Hearing person...they get impatient when there are times I don't always get all what they say. Lots of times I have them telling me this "Its your problem if you don't get what I said in the first time!" And they won't repeat it. That makes me mad when they do that. I don't think it is fair for Deaf person had to pull all the works to make the conversation easier and I believe Hearing should at least try to help in.
Sometimes with a habit I pretend that I heard everything and respond with yes or no. Because it is embarrassing when you don't always get everything they say.

it seems he is very particular about what "type" of size/shape he likes. i feel that my body does not fit his idea of perfection. i told him that his behaviour upsets me and he said i'm making his life difficult. he doesn't like having to watch what he says all the time, and that i shouldn't be so sensitive. he does not understand why i am taking his comments so personally. and my body image is not his problem and that i should go to the gym if i feel uncomfortable with the way i look. he has NEVER directly said anything derogatory about MY body however. do you think i am reading too much into the situation? am i being silly and taking it personally?
