Dude, wake up and smell the coffee. The romantic novels of their mothers (most notably Harlequin novels) were squalid titilatory books. The cover model on most of them was the same guy (Favio) and made his fortune because women lusted after him so much. You need to start taking your ocd pills and get a grip on reality.

No, no girl's mind is free from sleaze, and why should it be? And why should that make somebody a sl*t? Absolutely nothing wrong with those kind of books. Hey, they're better than porn which seems to be acceptable for most men these days.

Times have changed and there's no point in women dreaming about the kind of guy in romance novels that sweeps you off your feet because these days he doesn't exist!

Leave the girls alone - and if you don't like those kind of books then I'm sure you aren't forced to read them!

Female sexuality is by no means sluttish, nor is this kind of material less acceptable than the comparable male literature -- most of which is considerably more explicit, and usually heavily illustrated. It sounds like you have this idea of "woman as mother and therefore not sexual" that has haunted Western society since the days of Augustine. Women have sexuality and sexual drives, just like men do. If your mother liked a less sexy romantic novel, it was probably because of Victorian attitudes that liked to pretend that women were disembodied angels without sexual urges or desires. More explicit literature was largely unavailable, so she had to read what was available and use her imagination for the rest.

Now my complaint about the literature you describe isn't that it contains sex scenes -- it's simply that it's just not very good literature -- very formulaic and badly written, for the most part. And that was also true of the romances your mother read.

There's nothing slutty about reading modern books at all. The mills and boons man doesn't exist so theres no point in us dreaming. Modern books are more real to life and can be quite a funny read. We all need a bit of laughter at times. It's not all sleaze, maybe you should try reading some.

Before the D.H. Lawrence court case (Lady Chatterly's Lover), these novels were not available. So to answer the question:

They read them because they now can. Women like men are sexual beings, just us boys sometimes have an 'issue' with this as the women we most love at first is our mother, and then have a problem with seeing women as sexual creatures.

A women who likes sex is not a '****' she's human.

I think you show a strong bias on this question and I believe it would have been better not to have added the last two lines. Times have changed and things have come out in the open. The good Lord has given us a strong sex drive in order to keep the species reproducing and in some cases he has overcooked it. Nevertheless it is good fun and I don't want him to change anything

I hate crap like that actually. I read from the horror genre mostly. And the only romantic books I've read are the Jane Eyre, Emily Bronte, Charlotte Bronte, Thomas Hardy ones. Eejit

I am surprised a "gay" person is asking this question, as it obvious, women love romance, they are more sensitive than us MEN, and the ability to read in private allows one to explore their sexual fantasies in private. I personally do not presume/assume that women that read today's romance fiction are sluts, why would you?
