I started smoking when I was 16, back in 1962. This was back in the days before we clearly knew how bad smoking could be for a person. I started smoking because I thought it made me look "cool," which was very important for me at the time.
I finally quit smoking when I was 25, and please permit me to tell you why.
I went home to visit my parents one day, and noticed that my father seemed to be very upset. It turned out that he had just learned that the son of one of his close friends had died--a guy in his mid- 20s, like me. This guy had recently gotten married, had moved to Vermont, and had joined the volunteer fire dept. in the town where he lived. The poor guy met with tragedy at the very first fire he responded to--he died, not from burns, but from smoke inhalation!
I kept thinking about this, on and off, the rest of that day. And all of a sudden it dawned on me (as dumb as this might sound) that when I smoked a cigarette, I was inhaling smoke! The potential lethality and the utter stupidity of this had never occurred to me. I quit smoking, cold turkey, that very day.

Smoking is VERY bad for you. There is NOTHING good about it at all. Cigarettes are FULL of chemicals that are toxic to your body.... and the manufacturers put chemicals into them to get and keep you hooked. so go ahead... start smoking. Your clothes will soon smell bad as on old ashtray filled with cigarette butts, your teeth will turn yellow, your breath will smell terrible all the time ( the smell is coming from your lungs), your skin will start to look bad, your eyes will be red and the whites turn yellowish, you will start coughing up mucus, you will not be able to breathe well, you will spend lots of money each week, and when you want to stop, it will be PURE HELL to even think about quitting, and much worse than hell to quit. Oh yeah.... your rate of getting cancer skyrockets too. So.... go ahead... make the most foolish decision you can, and start smoking... you will regret it, but what 13 year old has enough smarts to listen to the reasoning of an adult who has been there?

Most people start smoking in order to be accepted by their peer group. Sad to say most young people think that smoking is a cool thing. Which it really isn't, it's disgusting and costly. I smoked for 43 years, I'm so grateful I have been able to quit. I have been smoke free for 20 years.

I think stress is a big one - a few people I know started to get through a rough time in their lives thinking they could easily stop. I myself have been tempted during times of difficulty, but I don't just because I don't want to end up dependant.
Also, a close family member has COPD along with many other health issues from smoking. They are young and knocking on death's door - they are the best anti-smoking campaign for me!

I started a very long time ago when it WAS cool. All the movie stars and entertainers smoked and advertisements for it were everywhere. Nothing was ever said about it being bad for your health. If only I knew then. I`ve been smoking for over forty years now!

Two of the most common reason come from mimicking adults, friends, etc in order to "fit in" (as in kids), the other is an attempt to relieve personal issues. Either way, smoking creates a more immediate problem that makes all other issues secondary.
Seeking help from a professional is much more healthier short and long term. When you fix your inner-self, you will not have the need for smoking, drinking, drugs, or any other self-destructive temporary remedy.

I started when my boyfriend asked me to light his cig.s in the car while he was driving. Both my parents smoked and my grandparents. By the time I started everybody knew it was bad for you, but I started anyway. After close to fifteen years I quit, I knew I had to quit someday, so out of the blue I went cold turkey. It has been close to six months but there are still times when I would love to have a puff or two. I won't give in, but I wish I never started.
