You can do LOTS of things. Call him, talk to him in person, help take his mind off the pain of his illness. Sure, you know you can't cure him physically but mentally you can do SO much for him. Get to know him better by asking question about things he did when he was your age. Let him tell you about his happy childhood ANYTHING that makes him smile. Smiles are under-rated. They can really make you feel better. We all know our family loves us but when we're going through something like cancer it's nice to hear it and have our family show it by their actions. Make him his favorite dinner and share it with him. Make him a CD of his favorite music. That will help him relax.

Basically, love him and be there for him even if it just means holding his hand. Good luck! :)

You don't say why you can't be there for him at the moment. Is it because of work obligations, or is it just that you can't deal with his state of health? You don't say what your mum said either, so I assume it was what is going to happen as his cancer progresses. Thinking positive is a good thing, but you must prepare yourself for the worst. Staying away is'nt going to help you. Did you stop to think that your presence might make him feel better? I think if you stay away you will regret it if he does'nt make it. My dad had parkinsons disease and alzhimers, it broke my heart everytime I saw him but he was so happy to see me, I could'nt stay away.I was with him when he passed and I'm so glad I was there to say goodbye and other things I wanted to say. It is very sad to loose a loved one, but I think in the long run it will help you to be there as often as you can. And it might make it easier for him too, and your mum so she does'nt have to go through this on her own. He is her dad, and no doubt she loves him and it would be killing her inside to see him like this, she needs support too, it broke your heart, imagine what it is doing to her! My prayers are with you and I hope he will pull through this. your reactions are normal, but you must deal with this and be strong. Hope all ends well and he will be fine.

You can be there for him even if it's a quick chat on the phone to tell him you love him and will pray for him. If he can't talk, then send a card with a similar message or simply tell someone on the phone to relay the message.

The realization is the expectation of death. You have to expect death to come especially with the elderly. Though it can be tough to deal with, it's easier when you realize they have lived a fuller life than most. There is nothing we can do to help a terminally ill person except be there if needed and to make their last days as pleasant as possible.

I'd like to say only, that you should try not to be overwhelmed by such thoughts 'cause there have been cases when a person who helped another to go through a serious illness got sick himself/herself.

my dad and my sister had cancer
dad beat it
my sister did not
all you can do is to pray for them and to LOVE THEM
give them all the support that you can
but try not to dwell on it and worry about it all the time
it will drive you nuts
and DO NOT back away from them
you will regret it
dont love them for the rest of their lives
love them for the rest of yours
