What if! is of no use for past events, it no longer serves you, as you couldn't prevent what you could not predict.
On a positive note what if! are marvellous words as what if is a question of unbounding possibilities!..

i would say that one of the worse things to say is that u r cursed with a vivid imagination. rarely do people get that quality.i remember a story abt a man sitting on the top of a hill of chalks and still searching for a piece of chalk. u have the solution to ur problem and u ignore it. why do u think that the only thing worthy in ur life is ur sad memories?dont u ever think abt the beautiful times u shared with ur brother? do u really think that what if are the worse words in language? what if u get a chance to get back to normal life and enjoy the beauty of the world? what if u get a chance to live ur life to the fullest or get a chance to fulfill ur dreams? what if u get the ability to put ur imagination into words? now friend, do u still think that what if are the worse words in ur language? dont u think that the dreams which go with them are really sweet?dont u think that u can work to make them reality rather than mere possibilities? i dont say that i am really brave. i wouldnt have coped with my brother's death(had such a thing taken place). but u have shown amazing courage by getting over it. why dont u extend this courage to the rest of ur life too? surely, u can utilize ur vivid imagination in a productive manner? the very question u have asked shows the depth of ur thought.as afreind has already suggested, u should try to express urselves through poems or an art which suits u. definitely, the what if question will always pop up? but if all the what if questions came to a reality where would the world have been? we do not have the ability to make the impossible happen. but we definitly can act within our limitations and succeed. therein lies the power of man- the ability to beat the odds, strive and succeed. our lives would be meaningless without a real challenge. god has given u a challenge. rise up and meet it, beat it and be the champ. i am sure that at one stage in ur life, u will trun back to look at your life and ask urselves,"" what if god had not given me my limitations?"
and u would answer" surely, i might have not succeeded in my life". the choice is urs. u can consider it to be the worst word in the language and live a life dreaming of the impossibilities or u can consider those words a blessing and lead a meaningful life. may god bless you. all the best.

I think I'd say the most futile. Especially when looking back on something that as already happened. What if we had done, said, etc. We can't change it so thinking about how life might have been is very futile. Like you I find the possibilities could never happen in most of the circumstances that I'd say the words in and that makes them just as futile as for the past!
My boss (very similar circumstances due to MS) is always saying, 'We can only play the game of life with the cards we are dealt' I think his Ace is the way he listens to others problems. He's better than any therapist! He says he stopped asking the What if question a long time ago and since meeting him I rarely do it myself now!
But saying that I can think of a sentence to use it in.>
'What if' the people on here read the full question before answering!

Hi, you will probably think its o.k. for him to answer, he's fit and active. But I have met and know people with terrible injuries who will never ever succumb to the deep abyss you are sliding into. You are only a para' you could have been a quaddo', if you are genuine you will know what I mean. If your an artist then do some thing artistic and worthwhile, make a splash, help someone else out if you think your a hopeless case. There are lots of people worse off who could benefit from your talent. A long time ago when I was trying to start a business as a mechanical engineer, working 24/7 + I had this guy call on me from a group called phab in the midlands. They had the oldest minibus I could ever remember seeing in the previous 35 years of my life. I was in dire straights financially myself just starting up from scratch and a family to feed. Anyway to cut it short, I worked kept that wreck on the road for them 'Gratis', for I had very little to spare, but they had nothing. Anyway I eventually got closed down for working from home. But I did not care as phab went on to help a lot of people a hell of a lot worse off than you. Myself? I sold my house bought a shop, and yes the council closed me down again due to rebuilding (demolition) they desperately needed the property for a pensioners complex. That was 25 years ago, its still a pile of rubble. Chin up, don't give up, never think 'what if' think instead'now what if I was to?' I hope this helps.

I do agree. There is nothing more negative than looking back to the past and wondering what would be if only...because it ALWAYS involves at least one factor that is impossible for us to change now. I have made MANY mistakes in my life and I am a firm believer in charma. The best advice I can give is to live your life with meaning...don't leave room for the "should of's", "would of's", or "could of's"...tell people that you care about just how much they mean to you, be the best person that you can be, live believing in charma and the golden rule, and try you best to avoid the people and the situations that could negetively impact your life. If you do all that, there will be no room for any doubt. You will know that you approached each situation with care and that it just simply...didn't work out.

I can identify with your line of thought, however, 'what if' can also be positive. Like if everything was great and you think about just how bad things could be. In that case what you have is a blessing and that 'what if' just brings it closer to you. So just as much as 'what if' can be horrible words in the English language, they can also be quite cool. I understand that with experiences in your life you feel they are bad words. I really feel for you, especially about your loss - I couldn't cope with losing my brother. I really hope you find some way of expressing your artistic abilities, for example, you could write poems and stories. I wish you all the best.

"What if?" Can be a beginning and can be an end.
First, I agree with what LuvFactor says . This is what u should think about.
I have a different way to tackle this.
It can be a beginning by remembering the good things which passed and saying to yourself i can do it again and the good ol' days cn come once again.
But it can be an end bec. it can depress u and frustrate u for the things that passed .
Know one thing . The past is dead and it only lives in our memories. WE can improve it and we can add to it.
It's your choice so u choose and u decide.
good luck

I agree. "If only"; "had I known" "I should have foreseen" " Why did I not listen?" "less haste" "I must have been blind/stupid" "I should not have trusted..."
They all go hand in hand and continue to torture you ad infinitum. I will not insult you with platitudes regarding your personal circumstances. All I can do is to tell you what someone once told me:
"There is no point in stirring the ashes of the past as all you will find is a taste for death. Life can give you a raw deal but at least you have lived, and there are things that can give you pleasure if only you give them a chance. You never know what is round the corner."
Bon courage!

The worst words are
CAN'T, Unable, Impossible, etc.. Any words that discourage people from doing something.
There is no "what if" things happen for a reason (someone dies, someone lives). You may be a paraplegic but you're alive for a reason (maybe someone else will learn something from you or you'll do something in the future that will benefit someone) but I guarantee there is a reason.

i can totally see where your coming from, if i get a case of the 'what if's' i find it hard to get back to positive thinking and seem to be sad for ages- i also find it can make you feel quite lonley and thats the worst thing ever!
Pesonally i hate the words 'can't and won't!' because the are so negative and always seem to be the start of a problem! and if i could ban any word from the dictonary it would be 'hate' because of all the bad things conected to the word!
