My Dad wouldn't take me to the zoo in case they wouldn't let me out again but now I've been with my mates. When we asked if there were any elephant rides, the lady was all snooty and said the zoo isn't an amusement park and their work was care and conservation. She talked as if we weren't welcome and we should just slide our entrance money under the door and bugger off.

I read the the natural cycle of cicadas is 17 years, meaning that the last "year of the cicadas in the midwest, usa" would have fallen in 2004. but weather affects the cycle, so how do we know that what we hear are cicadas or related insects in the trees, making their mating sounds?

could anyone tell me if an emu would be a good pet, considering it being in a 400 m2 space? and not just to have it there, but to interact with other people and maybe animals, I'd like an answer from someone who has been with them also, and not just a "yes theyre wonderful" response but the pros and cons, are they smart? how do they smell, would they be aggressive in any situation if you raise them from chicks, etc

I can't understand why animals are able to gobble down meat straight off the bone or that has been rotting for days, and Humans become extremely sick if meat is undercooked. Why is this what is different about their bodies and ours?

My Ph.D is going terribly, I've made little or no progress in my first year and have not even started the field based part of my research (on a native mammalian species). I feel that I'm doing it for all the wrong reasons; so that I don't let down family and friends, I'm terrified that they would think less of me if I was to pack it all in. I don't feel the excitment and joy of learning that I had as an undergraduate; I hate the fact that I've become unenthusiastic about something I had always been passionate about. I worry if I did quit I would regret it for the rest of my life. I feel that I won't have a chance in hell of getting a job after the Ph.D and wonder why I'm doing it. My academic supervisor has become uninterested in helping me and has been totally disinterested in the whole endevour, I'm also getting little support from technical staff in the department, who 'bend over backwards' for some other postgrads. I'm terrified because I don't know what I would do if I quit.
