The answer is yes. I just keep my distance and becareful not too frightened them or step on them. Unlike some species of sharks, stingrays and other type of rays, as well as skates, are not at all aggressive towards humans. They don't go out of their way to sting a person. When a threat approaches, they rather swim away. They will only sting you if you stepped on them or if they are cornered and have no where to swim. What happened to Steve Irwin was very rare and it was an unfortunate accident. Stingrays are just important to the ecosystem as any other creature.

I did, two years ago while on vacation in the Caymans.
They have a diving and snorkeling location there called Stingray City, where you can hand-feed stingrays bits of octopus and actually pet them. The animals have become so used to this daily feeding routine that they're practically tame.
These fish are so large and graceful, and their shape and muscular tone displays such force, that despite the petting zoo nature of the dive spot, it was a magical experience.

Stingrays don't attack human, unless it was being attack first. It's an act of self-defence. There are more dogs bite and kill people than stingrays, but still alot of people keep dogs as pet! Funny!

It's perfectly fine to swim with sting rays as long as you are wearing a darth vader mask and a black cape underwater. In fact the male sting ray might mistake you for a female waiting to mate!
