bumblebee bat

The world's smallest mammal is the bumblebee bat
of Thailand, weighing just less than a penny and is about 11 mm in length.

Some of you creature savvy people out there may think the world's smallest mammal is the Etruscan pygmy shrew and you may have a case. The debate is whether mass or size constitutes the smallest and although lighter, the pygmy shrew is longer.

Just wanted to say that Arnold J is absolutely correct. The Etruscan pygmy shrew is the smallest mammal if measured by body mass, while the bumblebee bat is the smallest if measured by skull length.

I'd also like to point out that the bumblebee bat and the Kitti's hog-nosed bat are actually the exact same critter. So no one who has answered this question at this point has been incorrect.

Kitti’s hog-nosed bat, also called the bumblebee bat, is the smallest mammal, measuring about 3.1 cm (1.2 in) long and weighing about 2 gm (0.07 oz). It is an endangered species whose estimated population of 200 or so lives only along the River Kwai in western Thailand. Groups of four or five roost in small caves and emerge at night to feed on insects.
