The Realm of the Senses

Everyone knows the old adage, "An elephant never forgets," and while this isn't necessarily true, it does suggest that elephants are somewhat intelligent, which they are. At the time of birth, most mammals' brains are nearly the same weight that they'll be when the animals are adults. In humans, however, the brain still has a great deal of developing to do, weighing only 27 percent of what it will eventually weigh. Amazingly, the elephant isn't far off; newborns' brains weight 35 percent of what they'll weight when the creatures are full-grown.

The elephant has a larger brain. The African elephant has the largest brain of any land animal. The blue whale has the largest brain of any animal on the planet. All elephants, whales and dolphins have larger brains than humans.

I read recently that "an elephant never forgets" is a myth, that this most likely refers to the observed behavior of elephants seeming to never forget any injury done to them and seeking revenge when possible. Now, THAT sounds like something humans do! ? !! :)

But what is it that an "elephant never forgets"?

Ever tried to teach one the alphabet? Arithmetic? Thery might be able to learn some rudiments, but they'll forget that pretty darned quickly. Where the best foods are? Something that hurt them badly, or made them ill? That they'll remember just fine.

It isn't true that an elephant "never forgets".

While they have good memory for many things (useful routes, important locations such as water holes, etc.) it is not out of line with the memory abilities of many mammals.
