They do sleep (deeply - hibernate to avoid the weather in the following months)

Snails hibernate during the winter (typically October through April in the Northern Hemisphere). They may also aestivate in the summer in drought conditions. To stay moist during hibernation, they seal their shell opening with a dry layer of mucus called an epiphragm.
