They do in fact still exist and are now reaching plague proportions as an invasive species in most of noth america. they are a crippling ailment to native fish stocks and are a real problem. Many of these "sea" lamprey entered via the st>Lawrence river and are now in many fresh water bodies.

Lampreys are still out there, if you know where to look (usually stuck on the side of a fish...) They spawn in fresh water. They're eel-shaped and are jawless.
