The Egg of the first chicken was laid by the very last ancestor of the chicken (I dunno what it was, but let's call it the cave-chicken)
The Cave-Chicken laid an egg. When it hatched, it seemed to be a mutated cave-chicken, a little different from the rest of the clutch. This "Chicken" had better survival traits, and so survived longer to mate more, producing more of these "chickens". The Cave-Chicken died out, as it was not as successful as this new "chicken".
Hence, the Egg came first.

DINA, you've really not thought this through, where did the chicken came from? The truth is that the egg came 1st because some dinosaurs hatched from eggs, way before the days of chickens.

The Egg. Because genetic material does not change during an animal's life.
Therefore the first bird that evolved into what we would call a chicken, probably in prehistoric times, must have first existed as an embryo inside an egg.

Isn't this a case of creation vs evolution?
Evolution: Egg came first, laid by a chicken like bird.
Creation: Chicken was created, which went on to lay eggs
So the choice is yours

It depends which chicken. I had a chicken call Brian and I saw him hatching from the egg. Therefore in this instance the egg came first.
But when I was knocking about in prehistoric times I saw a chicken just appear from nowhere. I called him Terrence.

The egg. The amniotic egg precedes the chicken, in terms of evolutionary biology. No one ever said that the egg was a chicken egg. :)
