My gram is convinced that during thunderstorms there is a good chance that lightening will come through an open window or door. I'm not saying it isn't a possibility, but I think there is a better chance of the outside of the house being hit.

What has the better chance of happening- Lightening coming through an open window or door? Or the outside of the house being hit by lightening?

I have lived in San Diego county for almost 8 years now. In those 8 years, there has probably been a total of 5 thunderstorms. We get plenty of rain storms, but lightning is VERY rare. I always assumed it had something to do with being so close to the ocean, and the storm needing to pass over land to build up the electricity for lightning or something like that.

In any case... I am intrigued because since this past Sunday there have been 3 lightning/thunder storms. 3 in 5 days after only 5 in 8 years?!?!

Can anybody explain why the change?? I love lightning, I am completely fascinated by it and always missed it when I moved from Colorado to California as a teenager... but I am just curious why there is a sudden frequency of lightning.

If I see a flash of lightning and count 5 seconds until I hear the thunder roll----then how far away was the lighting strike itself? I know that there is a crude way to measure how far away a lightining strike is.

There was a thunderstorm early this morning and it made me curious.

Ok listen to the weather forcast .
tomorrows weather will be sunny and dry.
just hang your washin out and before you know it you have to rewash them cause its pouring down..
yet meteorologists will give you 2 months in advance weather forcast how can they when they often get tomorrows wrong.
think of all the variables involved in the weather paterns here..if they would just stop guessin and tell the truth that your guess is as good as ours.
