My gram is convinced that during thunderstorms there is a good chance that lightening will come through an open window or door. I'm not saying it isn't a possibility, but I think there is a better chance of the outside of the house being hit.

What has the better chance of happening- Lightening coming through an open window or door? Or the outside of the house being hit by lightening?

Lightning comes almost straight down. Even if it came through the window, you would have to be almost right next to it. Plus, lightning hits the tallest thing. So, it would hit the top of your house or the roof before it would hit the window, door or anything else.

Let me tell you something what lightning is after is some sort of ground. Infact if you grab something with lets just say 600 volts and your elbow is close to a ground the electrical current will go through from your hand and exit out of your elbow. So if your home and lightning stikes your way it will most likely hit a tree nearby because it has water that conducts electricity to the ground. The only way that you can get struck by lightning in your house is if you have a whole bunch of cold water pipes all over the place that will ground the current. By the way I also heard that you should cover all of your mirrors in your house because they say that that attracts lightning. Good luck.

Lightning strikes something that acts like an electrode for it... Most likely a tall object, a tree, a house, etc..It doesn't "come through a window" However, one might feel the electrically charged air through an open window.
