I watch the weather channel a lot and I often wonder what weather paterns actually effect the meteoroligists in their home location since they never show emotion towards any warning or alerts

Why is that in the Atlantic they call it a Hurricane, but in the Pacific they call it a Typhoon? I know they're the same thing and such but was there any specific meaning behind it?

Now everyone here is celebrating since the the National Hurricane Center is saying "oh were so safe." I have tracked storms for a while and have seen such error in forecasts. Should we really be safe? What if it turns into the gulf then heads here? What if that low they been talking about isn't as weak as expected?

living on the south east coast my whole life, i'm very familiar with hurricane safety, and tornado safety, but that won't do me any good in southern california! i've looked online at earthquake safety, but i want DETAILED answers, like, am i safer on the 1st or 2nd story of my house in and after an earthquake? online so far basically all i've found is to stay inside. to which i have to reply...DUH. can anyone give me or point me to safety tips as to which story of my house i should be on (no basement), and other good information? thanks!

well my cousin and her family all went to puerto vallarta, mexico for some vacations. i dont know when they will be back *houston* but i think that they might come in like 2-3 days. (before school starts) is there a chance that hurricane dean might hit there??? thanks !!!!! lol
