What makes you stay?

Yes. My family (which is huge!) is all here. They've been here for generations, in south LA and south MS. I was born and raised here too, and this is home. That's what what makes me and a lot of other people I know stay here.

Incidentally, despite numerous hurricanes and tropical storms over the years, no one in my large family has ever had major damage to their home. Fences blown down, a shingle or two in the yard, but that's it. No flooding from storm surge. You have to know your elevations to know where to build around here, and a lot of the problem is that most people never paid much attention to the issue before Katrina. There is a reason the French Quarter in New Orleans did not flood like most of the city: the city's founders knew where to build, even hundreds of years ago.

Plus, despite media hype, every city doesn't get hit every year, or even every 5 or 10 years.

Well, I live in an earthquake zone, but I often wondered the same thing about the people in the hurricane areas. I think that maybe it's because it is such a long shot that they will be destroyed more than once in a lifetime. Each hurricane hits in a slightly different area. Probably family has much to do with it too.

Hurricanes don't come every day, and they actually only rarely will have a direct effect on a specific location. There were about 5 hurricanes that came within 50 miles of my home within a 2 year period. One scored a direct hit on the town that I live in. Where I live in NC, if you are reasonably aware, cautious, and prepared, a hurricane will inconvenience you about once every 3-4 years. Besides that, you just have to prepare and be thankful if the storm passes. There is more to life than just preparing for storms.

I live in Southeastern Florida.
I f*ckin hate it here. And not because of the hurricanes. The hurricanes are like the best part. I hate it because of the people and the fact that nothing ever dries because it's so humid. I hate that it takes like 10 hours just to get out of this state.
When a hurricane comes everyone stays in their houses. You don't have to go to work/ school. The weather is cool (usually).

I AM leaving. ASAP.

I live in west central Florida at the Gulf of Mexico. We can get hit from an Atlantic hurricane if it crosses the state from east to west. Also if the hurricane tracks to the Gulf of Mexico, It can it us direct or skirt up the coast of our state. We are always on the look out this time of the year.

I stay because this is the closest to Paradise we can get. The winter months are great and of course we've got Mickey! lol

I live just east of Houston, Tx. Texas hurricane central. The reason I stay? A couple of things, my family and my wife's family is all here. And my job. I have looked all over the country, and no where but Houston can I have the job that I have and make as much money as I do. Houston is pretty much the armpit of the US as far as I am concerned, but with all the industry that is here, it sure does pay well.

also that summer we had severe weather almost every week. (thuogh not directly related to the remnants.)
