Hurricanes rotate in a counter clock-wise direction due to coriolis force.This is an apparent force brought about by the rotation of the earth.This causes deflection of wind in a counter clock-wise direction in the northern hemisphere and clock-wise in the southern hemisphere.
This force varies with wind speed as well as with latitudes.It is maximum at poles and zero near equator.Any low pressure system which forms within 5 degrees latitude from the equator(on both hemispheres) do not become a revolving storm (like the hurricanes) as the coriolis effect is negligible and does not impart the whirling motion which characterises any revolving storm.

Air masses and large bodies of waters' currents are influenced by the Coriolis Effect. The phenomenon is caused by the slow rotation of the earth, and causes the cyclonic counter-clockwise rotation in the northern hemisphere around low pressure air masses, and clockwise rotation in the southern hemisphere.
It is not a strong force, and can only be seen by ocean currents and air masses. Draining bathtub water and toilets will not produce the same effect.

Hurricanes/Typhoons in the northern hemisphere rotates in a counterclockwise direction.
But hurricanes/typhoons in the southern hemisphere rotates in a clockwise direction.
The reason for this is the Coriolis effect. That is the rotation of the earth causes them to rotate so.
