I saw 3 in north lincolnshire. I love clouds and the weather and knew what I was looking at but bizzarly I've often driven that road in a storm and thought it would be obvious for one to occur there.
I did look twice as I thought I was imagining it! ha ha Anyway, the cloud base was pretty much flat but coming down from them were 3 tubes. People could have mistaken them for just extra bits of cloud to start with but they looked really smooth on the edges not fluffy or jaggedy or anything so I twigged straight away. By the time I'd stopped (less than 10 seconds to get off the road) the last one was being sucked back up and dispersed so I got a crap photo. Must have been T1, maybe T2. Nothing massive but amazing to watch and what an adreneline rush!
Next step is storm chasing in the USA me thinks.

Tornadoes are more common in the UK than they are in the USA, when you compare tornadoes per square mile. The USA has a larger, warmer land mass - exactly what a tornado needs to build up more energy. In the UK, you can never be more than 70 miles from the sea, so most just drift out to sea and become no threat as they die out.
Last year, some areas of London suffered serious tornado damage, as did Birmingham. The London tornado was soon followed by the Kent earthquake, we are no strangers to things like this!

Yep, I have outside Lincoln, my brother has off the coast at Hunstanton during a sailing dinghy race. The tornado capsized about 40 boats and actually lifted one boat about 12 feet out of the water. My son actually lived in the road in Birmingham at the time that it was hit by a tornado.

Twenty people were injured - three seriously - after winds of 130mph were recorded in Birmingham at 1445 BST Thursday.28th July 2005
"We have an average of 33 reports of tornadoes in the UK each year but these are especially rare in built-up areas and there has not been one of this strength in many years," said a Met Office spokesman on Friday 29th July 2005

The nearest I've come to seeing a tornado in England was a funnel cloud over Morecambe Bay a few weeks ago. I'd love to see one and I'd love to go to America and chase them, there are actually companies that sell "Storm chasing holidays".....I'll have to start saving up.

My neighbours saw one in essex in our feild and there was one up here now where i live too but i missed that one they are about but i wouldn't say they were common and most don't do much damage. I saw what almost became a tornado once in the clouds above the sea once it looked like a funnle a coastguard pointed it out to me.

Tornado's, yes I've seen them, off the North Wales Coast, at sea, I was fishing in my boat and I must admit, it got a bit scary when they started to come our way! they collapsed a few hundred meters away, but it was a bit of a panic, at the time!

I remember the storm of 1987 as if it were yesterday. My bedroom window bowed in so much I thought it would blow. All I heard all night was smashing. The next day looked like a war zone. There were no trains, buses, electricity etc. The high street was a mess of smashed hoardings and glass. It was quite something.

While the UK does not have as many tornadoes as the USA it has more per unit area than the USA.
