I live in Switzerland and a couple of days ago the storm started at about 10.00 a.m. and continued for 24 hours. There was a short pause and then they started again. The last flash of lightning and thunder roll was round about 4.00 p.m.. That's 30 hours! Can anyone beat this?

WOW!!! That was some storm, there must have been some massive storm system around, I would have loved to have seen it, I LOVE storms. Where I live (on the coast on the north-west England) we hardly get thunder storms as such, we tend to get thundery showers where there's only a couple of flashes and a few rolls of thunder, but nothing lasting more than a few minutes.

The key word here is your thunderstorm had a lot of instability. which continued and that it didn't have any foward movement to it so it just stood there in one spot. The short pause was the fact it did move on, only to be replaced by another one right on its heels.

i can't beat IT but that's the answer to your question.on how long it depends on the size of both the hot air & cold air fronts that are coliding.
