I know it usually works the other way round, but to what extent do you think that invention and progress in science are influenced by works of fiction?

For example, I'm pretty sure that nobody will even try and make an intelligent robot even if we had the technology. Movies like Terminator and I, Robot have taught us why we shouldn't try that!

Do you think that the cars/clothes/buildings/space ships, etc of the future will actually look like what we see in science fiction?

Four of us have one early night seen what seemed to be a very large hairy primate running speedly towards us from bushy dunes towards the Atlantic seashore. It was black and huge and run in an erect position. We do not drink or do drugs and this is a serious question. Of course we got a fright and run and never looked back. It was along the coast north of San Clemente del Tuyu and about 450 metres from the town. There, the beach seems to be almost a 100 metres wide. I spotted it first and asked my companions .-what's that? We just run so fast! It was late at night and deserted. I find it equally strange that some huge charachter would have been in costume awaiting to scare a bunch of strollers late at night. Specially when nobody did walk along the sea at all at night. Has anybody, seriously, have had a similar experience there or somewhere in Argentina? I suppose we will never know what to make of it. Still, curiosity will always make us ponder what was that occurrence all about.

As i had asked this question in the R&S category people had recommended me to ask it in the sciecne section and i am now....

Ive always thought that atheists are clever people because they dont blindly follow their parents or anyone else. But my question is if you think there is no God.. how did the universe come into existence( i know well about the big bang theroy and the Quran talks about it as well) but the big bang theory suggests it came out of nowhere basically the collision of dust particles... if your saying that explosion created the universe, then how can anyone believe that.. because explosions are knowns to DESTROY things and not create. And another thing is how can DNA and RNA come into existence at the same time? How did the first ancestor actually come out of.. as the theory suggests life came out of a non living thing (ABIOGENESIS)... how is that logically possible??? Please no stupid answers. So the stupid ones stay out

Come on, Doctors, bio,scienctists/mathematicians cant even make more than a celeb. What are good celebs. make in the world, they do useless stuff, besides entertain people. Come on now, scientists should at least make a descent amount of money. Scientists made a much much difference in the world. Famous scientists should at least get paid equal to a celeberity like Stephen Hawkings come on now, whos with me?

Whats the taboo why?

Einstein should at least make a much more money than celeb. Its common sense.

When theists talk about "macroevolution" they will say that it has never been observed, which is true. We have never seen family to family evolution in action except mostly in the interpretation of the fossil record.

But in criminal trials we normally do not see the defendant committing the crime. So why do we use a lower standard for something with way bigger consequences? People can be killed and imprisoned for life for something that we never actually saw them do, we of course use evidence that was left behind that shows that the person or event happened.

So why do we use the "I never saw it standard" when it comes to science if the overwhelming evidence shows that something happened even when we didn't see it for ourselves? Why do we not use the "I need to see it" for criminal trials?

Another example is continental drift. If before we could measure continental drift would we be right in saying that it is real based on the ample climatological and paleontological evidence?

3 men walked into a hotel and asked for a room. The man at the desk told them that the room was $30, so the 3 men split it evenly, paying $10 each. After they left the front desk and went to unpack in the room, the desk manager realized that the room was only $25, so he sent the extra $5 he overcharged them with the bell boy to give to the men. The bell boy couldn't figure in his head how to split the $5 three ways, so he gave each man $1 each and kept $2 for himself. This means that the men would have only paid $9 each for the room. $9 times 3 is $27, plus the $2 that the bell boy kept would be $29. What happened to the other dollar???
