Choose one face of the cube and call it the top. The opposite face is then the bottom. Bisect the vertical edges and connect the midpoints with lines. Find the center of top and bottom by drawing their diagonals. These points and the midpoints of the verticals then become the vertices of the octahedron. The octahedron is formed by passing planes through any two adjacent midpoints and the top center and/or bottom center. An octahedron constructed this way will not be a regular octahedron.
