Hang on - lighting loads of candles - I feel religion coming into this.

And the Lord said, "Let there be light" and there was light!

However on a more serious note - are you left or right handed - please don't say you're ambidextrous, anyway, take the lighter in your right hand - if you are right handed. Position it with the flame nozzle pointing to the right and upwards, towards your finger. Rest your thumb on the wheel and stroke the wheel downwards, away from your finger, towards the gas lever/tab. Keep your thumb on the gas tab, holding it down. A spark will be emitted from the flint which should ignite the escaping gas. As long as you hold the gas tab/lever down a flame should be present. I do still think God is your best bet!

Yes, they do work. I don't smoke, but I've seen people use them in the past. From what I can tell, you have to touch the end of the cigarette to the hot element inside the lighter--there is no actual flame. How does what get its name? Cigarette lighter? That seems rather obvious, doesn't it?

They now have lighters that are made to light candles.

With a match you rub it down a strip of coarse paper and a flame comes out, with a lighter you turn a wheel, it amazes me soemtime the questions that are asked on her, and me stupid enough to answer them.

Easy, just use your thumb to turn the grooved wheel (to produce a spark) then move thumb to gas tab/lever, keep it pressing on this (releases the butane) and you should have a flame.

Actually this is difficult to explain in words! Showing you practically would be so much easier!

Take your lighter

Go to your nearest petrol station

Get out your lighter

Later on buy an ignition lighter with what's left after you have paid your fine.
