You probably want to go for a biological poison. Elements like arsenic, uranium, vanadium, zinc or copper can be deadly in the right dosages, but are fairly easy to detect -- even after a body's been cremated!

Biological poisons can also usually be detected fairly easily, and tests for a few common ones are routinely conducted on people who have died in suspicious circumstances. So the trick in your novel would be to either use a very rare poison, or make the circumstances seem less suspicious. (Or arrange for a "re-murder": e.g. the already dead victim is stabbed, so the death looks like a stabbing, not a poisoning.)

Ricin is very toxic. A dose as small as 0.2mg will kill. It was famously used in the James-Bond-style muder of Georgi Markov. It's also reasonably easy to make, as it's found in the castor bean, which is a commonly available plant. It's quite unoriginal though -- it's a commonly used poison in fiction.

Botulinum toxin is pretty cool. It's a very powerful nerve agent. In small quantities it is used in anti-aging treatments, and is better known as "botox". It is toxic to a degree that ricin can only dream of -- you could kill every human being on earth with about a pound of botox. "Botulism" is the term for botox poisoning -- it's a fairly nasty form of food poisoning caused by eating contaminated food. The botox itself is destroyed by heat, but the spores that *produce* the botox are not, which is why you're not supposed to reheat cooked rice.

Tetanospasmin is a similar nerve agent. It's resonsible for the medical condition tetanus. Although people are routinely vaccinated against tetanus, the vacinnation is against the *spores* that produce the toxin, rather than the toxin itself. So if the toxin entered the body directly, then I don't think immunisation would help -- check with a doctor to make sure though. It causes spasms in its victims.

Digitalis is another good one, though it also tends to be overused in fiction. It's fairly easy to detect, but it might not seem that suspicious to the coroner, as it is used legitimately to treat some heart conditions. The fatal dosage is not much more than the medicinal dosage either.

Tetrodotoxin could be useful if your murder victim is a sushi fan. It is found in certain parts of the pufferfish body. Fugu is a famous Japanese delicacy made of raw pufferfish meat -- prepared incorrectly, it can contain deadly amounts of tetrodotoxin. Again, it's a bit old-hat though.

Saxitoxin is more sexy. Its usage as a chemical weapon was researched by the CIA in the 1960s. It's produced by particular algae, and can accumulate in shellfish, as they're filter feeders and consume algae. It's occasionally the cause of food poisoning, and can result in paralysis and respiratory failure.

So my advice would be to have your victim go out for a meal and later die of apparent food poisoning.

You had me worried, until I read about it being for a story!

Not sure but think botulinum toxin is untraceable. Don't quote me on it though!

A web site I recommend is http://www.youtips.info/r/rd.asp?gid=547 by Steve and Becky Holman.
They teach you how to look younger and literally reverse the aging process. This program is not about drugs, supplements or gimmick. It's 100% natural: there are specific ways to move, eat and think that tell your brain to stop the aging process. They also teach all the things the you absolutely have to avoid if you want to slow the aging process and achieve your ideal body.

"Most deadliest" is an extremely toxic use of the English language. (If it's a grammarian you're planning on killing, go for it.)
