A man is walking his dog on a leash towards home at a steady 4 mph. When they are nine miles from home, the man lets the dog off the leash. The dog immediately runs off towards home at 9 mph. When the dog reaches the house, it turns around and runs back to the man at the same speed. When it reaches the man, it turns back for the house. This is repeated until the man gets home and lets the dog in.
How many miles does the dog cover from being let off the leash to being let in the house?

This is from a test review and this is the only one I am having trouble with... If someone could please explain it to me, I'd be very grateful. :)

Babe Ruth hit a home run that was estimated to have landed 180m from home plate and to have reached a height of 21.3m. Find the initial velocity of the baseball and the angle it made with the horizontal.

We have to use a combination of any of these equations:
x=vt
final v = initial v +at
y = (initial v)t +.5a(t^2)
(final v)^2= (initial v)^2 + 2ay

a=9.81 m/s^2

And he gave us the answer to check ourselves, and it's 48 m/s at 25 degrees.

Thank you!

It is suppose to be stainless steel, we get a build up of something in this and it can be taken off with limeaway or scubbing with steel wool soap pad. I'd like to know if we can put something in the water to keep it from happening.

I read somewhere that people who are really good at math understand the concepts behind it, rather than simply knowing how to do it? What does this mean? Tips on how to do this?
