Anything that prevents the transfer of heat to the ice.

The best "material" would be a vacuum, but any insulating material that reduces the transfer of heat from the ambient surroundings such as air by conduction or convection will help.

Layers of insulation work. Even if you make a box with just a layer of air. Styrofoam, foil with the shiny side out, cardboard... anything that absorbs/repels heat.

Sawdust mixed with water to make ice will extend the melting period---there was a wild idea in WWII to make unsinkable aircraft carriers for use in the North Sea with this method. It was called "Pikecrete"
