x = 1000 because 10^3 = 1000

Although the question doesn't state the base of the log, i'll do it twice, once assuming base 10 and also using a natural log, ln.
Log x = 3,
x = 10^3 = 1000.
However, if it is a natural log,
Log x = 3,
x = e^3 = 20.085...

The log of a number is the power to which you raise the base to get the number. So in this case the log, namely 3, is the power to which you raise the base (unspecified) to get the number, namely x.

If you don't specify the base, then it's usually e. So x = e^3.

Another common base is 10. If it's base 10, then log x = 3 means x = 10^3 = 1000.

When you see log just by itself it's assumed you're using log10.

log10 is essentially the inverse of 10^x.

So when you have logx = 3, and it asks you to solve for x, it's basially asking:

Ten to the 3rd power equals what?

In this case, 1000.

There are different logs... if you ever came across, say, (log6) x = 7, (where the six is a subscript), solving for x would be like asking six to the seventh power equals what?

In that vein, log50 = x is like: Ten to the WHAT equals 50?

Hope this helps. =)

You can switch the logarithmic function to an exponential function that looks like:

10^3 = x

Solve for x.

x is 1000!
