Nyiragongo is part of the Virunga volcanic chain along the East African Rift in eastern DRC. Both sides of the rift are considered by some geologists to be the African Plate, and other geologists have decided to call them the "East African Plate" and the "West African Plate."

Nyiragongo is a stratovolcano with a lava pool, therefore it is considered active.

Hope that helps!

Two parts of the African Plate are breaking apart to create The Great Rift Valley (which runs from northern Syria in SW Asia to Mozambique, East Africa. In eastern Africa the valley divides into the Western Rift & the Eastern Rift Valley.

The Nyiragongo volcano is very active. The last eruption was 2002.
