What is light made of??

Hello Scholars!
I wanted some guidance about those fields in Astronomy where you can specifically become a non-teaching full time Research Scientist or Staff Scientist instead of a Lecturer or Professor.

There are positions of this kind at some places including NASA, STScI, NRAO and some Universities. Is there anything particular one needs to be at these positions?

I think of cowboys, Austin, San Antonio, stockyards, desert, piney woods, Galveston, Eva Longoria, Hilary Duff, George W. Bush, Gov. Rick Perry, cosmopolitan cities, no income tax, Alamo, Austin City Limits, McGregor Cafe, Mile marker 880 on I-10, Bob Knight, the state flag, and so on.

Oh yeah, I'm moving down from Kentucky. If anybody can make any comparisons, that would be great. Thanks!
