The trick is to make the item's density adjustable so that you can make it perfectly neutral in bouyancy.

Take a balloon and find a paperclip or something that will seal off the tube end of it.

Put some water in the balloon until it is a good size (not too big) and put it in the tank. If it sinks, take it out of the tank and blow some air into it. If it floats, let out some air or put a couple paper clips to weight it down a bit.

Keep testing it and adding a bit of air until the object is neutrally bouyant. Be prepared to do this on the test day because the weather will affect the air pressure in the balloon and change the density (and bouyancy of air). You can try and make a number of these over a couple of days (as the weather changes) and then you will be sure to have one that will present well.

What about pouring in a jug of water (just the contents keep the jug)? It will stay there, mix around with the other water, but never sink or float. No one can prove that it is not still in the center of the tank.

A plastic bag full of water is the answer. Also anything with a specific gravity of 1 will do the trick.

A small aquatic animal .... an tame and obedient otter might stay in the middle of the tank if you told it to sternly enough.

Water has the density of 0.99997 g/ml. Here's a list with the densities of various objects. Make sure their densities are 0.99997 g/ml

A water balloon. Okay, so you have to buy it, but it only costs a few cents (well, a dollar something if you buy a bag of them).

a water balloon will float because there will most likely be some air in it. otherwise it will sink....

carve out a piece of wood and place small rocks in it until it is neutrally buoyant
