Recently, the World body concluded that since Pluto did not contribute to the essential characteristics of a planet, and possibly got gravitated towards Neptune, another planet's orbit, Pluto was shown the door. I wonder as our knowledge of universe (with all its milky ways and galaxies, emerging or collapsing stars ) expands exponentially, sooner or later, it appears to me, we may be classifying one day Sun as a dwarf star, not doing perfectly the functions of a Star. Does anyone around feel it is possible?

I was watching Syriana in which a swimming pool light has failed so the water is charged with electricity. This is analogous to when people drop toasters in swimming pools. The thing is that I would have thought the electricity would take the easiest route to earth, which would only be you if you were still touching the sides and the pool was insulated from earth itself. So why does the electricity travel through the higher resistance material (the body)?? Or if it doesn't, how does it kill people??

The arctic ice cap is as far as i am aware mainly free floating. Therefore, the volume of water displaced is equivalent to the weight of ice sitting on it. The density of ice is lower hence it floats and its volume is greater would it not be a zero sum result. Just how much would a total melt down actually raise sea levels.
The Antarctic is a different kettle of fish!!

In the middle of a dark night, a team of 4 somewhat injured commandoes are on their way back from a tough mission. To complete their return, they have to cross a narrow, dangerous and collapsing bridge. The leader of the team makes some quick estimates:

The bridge would collapse completely in 17 minutes
Due to the injuries, each member would take a different time to cross the bridge. The time for the different members to cross the bridge are 10 min, 5 min, 2 min and 1 min respectively.
Due to the dangers involved, at most two members can travel across the bridge at a time
Moreover, they have only one working flashlight, which means that the flashlight must be carried back for the next pair to cross the bridge

Can they all make it across in time? If so, then how?

Hi all! I've got a question on capacitance.
For resistors in series, the rule is that the higher the resistance of an appliance, the higher the potential difference across it.
What about capacitors in series? Is it the higher the capacitance of a capacitor, the lower the potential difference across it?

My son is 8 and wants to learn about astronomy (i know zero about it either!), but the websites i have seen seem to be written by people who have forgotten what it was like to know absolutely nothing about astronomy. We need something that starts with the absolute basics-everything! Anyone know of such a site? Thanks
