After mating the butterfly has done what it was created for - to continue the species. They will die 6-8 weeks after using up all its sperm mating with various females. Similarly the female will die after she has laid all her eggs - usually between 300 and 800. Only a few of these will survive the process of becoming butterflies.

When the first answer says it so well, I have to recommend you vote for her. But let's face it, men; how much defense of the nest is a butterfly? How much food brought back for the young and their mother? Different species have different strategies for the way they breed, but several have a drone-style male: he really only has one job, and when it is done, why waste food keeping him going? To a Black Widow, he IS food!
Aren't you glad humans are so very much more civilized? Mostly.
