You got a lot of BAD ANSWERS. One thing that really ticks me off when I'm talking to people in person is when they can't tell the difference between what they know and what they imagine. It's bigger problem than most people think. Here, I'll let it slide most of the time, because if I didn't, I'd have little time to do anything else besides respond to people's flatly wrong statements!
To clarify a few things:
1) Ulcers do not happen because the stomach is empty and has nothing else to work on. Ulcers are strongly related to infection of the stomach with a bacterium known as Helicobacter Pylori.
2) The rugae, which are folds in the lining of the stomach, play no role in the mechanism of defense against digestive forces. They are present when the stomach is empty and when it is full.
3) The lining of the stomach is in NO WAY "digestion proof" and in no way does diet affect it unless you are basically starving to death and the nutritional depletion is causing broad total system healing problems.
4) Fevicol is a brand of glue made in India. The person that mentioned it is making some sort of stupid joke. I didn't get it till I looked it up.
There are a few things you'd want to know about in order to understand a legitimate answer to your question. First of all, the digestive action of the stomach is stimulated by food. Just before you eat, the brain sends nerve impulses to the stomach telling it to rev up (this is called the cephalic phase). When you actually eat, the types of chemical structures in the food are detected and the stomach reacts. Blood flow increases, movement increases, acid secretion occurs, and enzymes are released. Between meals, the system is not reacting like this at all.
Secondly, the stomach lining is a type of "mucosa" which is a word that describes mucus secreting lining tissue. A layer of mucus is constantly being secreted onto the surface, and it contains bicarbonate ions which work to deactivate stomach acid once it penetrates into the mucus layer. The pH (acidity) of the mucus layer is much less acid up against the cells than it is on the top, facing into the stomach.
Finally, the stomach is a very active metabolic organ. The lining cells are constantly being replaced as they are damaged and fall off. Microscopic injury is happening all the time and is repaired at a remarkable pace. At the microscopic level, the mucosa is a vast field of tiny pits and pores. Within these pits, cells are being manufactured constantly. As they reproduce, they push up along the lining wall of the pit and out onto the surface where they subsequently slough off.
Like most things in the body, the fact that the stomach lining appears unchanged by destructive forces is a result of dynamic stability. The destructive forces are met by an equal and opposite constructive ability. Almost all systems in the body involve some sort of similar balance between creation and destruction. Nothing is quiet. Everything is in motion. This is called homeostasis, the amazing capacity of living tissue to hold conditions within a fairly narrow range of operating parameters.
I hope that helps.
I avoided talking about ulcers in depth because it's a huge topic. If you have questions about ulcers, go ahead and contact me.

Normally the stomach is protected from digestion by a stomach lining.
However sometimes, particularly when a person is stressed the lining of the stomach is damaged. Then the stomach can start to get digested - the person gets ulcers. These are very painful.
Of course when a person is starving the body starts to digest muscle first. Generally a person woud be dead before the body was able to start digesting much of the actual organs of the body.

Stomach secretes thick mucus in a very large quantity. This mucus stays as a hard thick lining between the gastric secretion like pepsin and muscular layer of stomach preventing its digestion. When mucus secretion gets diminished, stomach in parts is digested forming peptic ulcers.

hello kumar i hope i answere u well
now the stomach doesnt digest itself since the goblet cells present in the lining produce mucus which protects the innermost layer of the stomach this is the common reason
but its also due to a fact that the enzymes stored in stomach are stored in their zymogenic form or the inactive form so their effect is quite reduced.
